The \u2018snow\u2019 is a shower of dead microscopic organisms, faeces, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mucus-and-slime-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mucous<\/a>, fish scales and other organic detritus, falling constantly to the inky depths. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/best-deep-sea-videos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>On the way down, much is captured by filter-feeding animals, with the rest settling on the ocean floor as a thick, oozy layer of silt. It is \u2018manna from heaven\u2019 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/marine-snow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deep-sea urchins<\/a>, worms and other creatures.
