{"id":590230,"date":"2026-08-20T05:30:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T05:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/590230\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T05:30:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T05:30:10","slug":"watch-rocket-lab-launch-a-private-japanese-earth-observing-satellite-to-orbit-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/590230\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch Rocket Lab launch a private Japanese Earth-observing satellite to orbit today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-54065242-9c18-11f1-9fae-3922fa51c2ae\">Rocket Lab will launch a private Japanese Earth-observing satellite to orbit this morning (Aug. 20), and you can watch the action live.<\/p>\n<p>An <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electron-rocket.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electron-rocket.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electron-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Electron<\/a> vehicle is scheduled to lift off from Rocket Lab&#8217;s New Zealand site today, during a window that opens at 9 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT; 1 a.m. on Aug. 21 local New Zealand time), carrying aloft a radar satellite for the Tokyo-based company iQPS.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-54065242-9c18-11f1-9fae-3922fa51c2ae-2\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rocket Lab<\/a> will stream the proceedings live, starting at about 30 minutes before liftoff. You can watch <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/rocketlabcorp.com\/live-stream\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/rocketlabcorp.com\/live-stream\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">via the company<\/a>, and Space.com will carry the feed as well if it&#8217;s made available.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-54065332-9c18-11f1-b3ff-7d40c9a7edc2\">This will be Rocket Lab&#8217;s ninth launch for iQPS, which is building a constellation of 36 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (LEO). Such spacecraft can study Earth day or night, and they can peer through cloud cover as well.<\/p>\n<p>The iQPS network &#8220;is being developed and deployed at a rapid pace to provide high resolution and near-real time SAR imagery to its global users,&#8221; Rocket Lab wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/rocketlabcorp.com\/missions\/launches\/the-lightning-god-defends\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/rocketlabcorp.com\/missions\/launches\/the-lightning-god-defends\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">description of today&#8217;s mission<\/a>, which it calls &#8220;The Lightning God Defends.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>That name is a reference to the satellite going up today: It&#8217;s nicknamed SUSANOO-II, after a Japanese lightning god.<\/p>\n<p>If all goes according to plan, the Electron&#8217;s upper &#8220;kick stage&#8221; will deploy SUSANOO-II about 50 minutes after launch, at an altitude of 357 miles (575 kilometers).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-54065422-9c18-11f1-b352-57f276093dba\">Today&#8217;s flight will be Rocket Lab&#8217;s 14th of 2026 and 93rd overall. The company&#8217;s most recent launch, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-launches-japanese-earth-observing-satellite-after-5-week-delay-video-photos\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-launches-japanese-earth-observing-satellite-after-5-week-delay-video-photos\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-launches-japanese-earth-observing-satellite-after-5-week-delay-video-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on Aug. 6<\/a>, also lofted an iQPS satellite to LEO.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of the company&#8217;s flights have been performed by Electron, a 59-foot-tall (18 meters) rocket that gives small satellites dedicated rides to Earth orbit and beyond.
