The Music City indie-rock band, led by the charismatic frontperson Oliver Pierce, brought their synth sounds and kinetic stage show to Jon Bon Jovi\u2019s honky-tonk downtown for a daylong bill headlined by Cage the Elephant. It was as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/cma-fest-2026-cage-the-elephant-nashville-rock-1235573935\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weird, and invigorating<\/a>, as it sounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn Friday, New Translations debuted one of the new songs they\u2019ve been working on with producer Yves Rothman (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/blondshell-if-you-asked-for-a-picture-interview-1235326507\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blondshell<\/a>): \u201cModern Lovers\u201d is a blast of hypnotic synth-pop that finds Pierce craving a time when life seemed uncertain. Surprisingly, he\u2019s talking about the pandemic, when he and his friend circle were fantasizing about escaping to Thailand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a song about the distance between who we were then and who we are now: the shortcomings, the vices, and the miles of hindsight,\u201d Pierce says in a statement. \u201c\u2018Modern Lovers\u2019 is about longing \u2014 not to be who we were then, but for the feeling that anything was possible, whereas now so much of life feels so pathed out and certain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe track, which calls to mind the Killers and other kingpins of synth-rock, is also a preview of New Translations\u2019 forthcoming album, the follow-up to their 2025 debut Vacation.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlong with bands like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lombardy-nashville-rock-band-jane-fonda-song-1235600516\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lombardy<\/a>, Flight Attendant, and Snooper, who just performed on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-pictures\/die-spitz-snooper-rock-tour-1235595125\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rolling Stone\u2019s Rock Tour<\/a>\u00a0with Die Spitz,\u00a0New Translations are leading a new class of indie-rock in Nashville, a scene that has been elevated thanks in part to the Rocknite live showcases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cRocknite has done a really good job in establishing community of the alt scene, whether that\u2019s alt-rock, pop, anything left of country,\u201d Pierce told Rolling Stone in June. \u201cMaybe in some way it\u2019s infiltrating, but I\u2019m happy to be a part of any sense of putting a spotlight on the community that we have.
