We asked the experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-0cd760c8-9fe7-11f1-baae-23460650297b\">In August 2001, filmmaker John Carpenter said &#8220;Boo!&#8221; and unleashed &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0228333\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0228333\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ghosts of Mars<\/a>&#8221; on the world. While not one of Carpenter&#8217;s most revered works, it&#8217;s still a neat <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/best-sci-fi-horror-movies\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/best-sci-fi-horror-movies\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/best-sci-fi-horror-movies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sci-fi horror movie<\/a> in which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> has been terraformed \u2013 84% terraformed to be exact \u2013 and inhabited by humans. Plus, it has Jason Statham and Ice Cube in it, so it&#8217;s automatically 99% better than all other movies ever made.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the action takes place at Shining Canyon, a remote mining outpost on Mars that has a gritty wild west\/Mad Max-ness vibe; it&#8217;s cold, harsh, and so so so so soooooo dusty \u2013 not exactly a dream home location.<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the whole &#8220;scary horde possessed by ancient extraterrestrial evil spirits trying to kill you&#8221; thing. But let&#8217;s remove the spooky elements and put them aside for one second, and really consider the possibility of actually living on Mars. It&#8217;s been 25 years since the movie was released, so how much closer are we to calling <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/is-mars-really-red-a-physicist-explains-the-planets-reddish-hue-and-why-it-looks-different-to-some-telescopes\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/is-mars-really-red-a-physicist-explains-the-planets-reddish-hue-and-why-it-looks-different-to-some-telescopes\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/is-mars-really-red-a-physicist-explains-the-planets-reddish-hue-and-why-it-looks-different-to-some-telescopes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Red Planet<\/a> our new home?<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/68odXfD8dF8Hxjxw2VCxwa.jpg\" alt=\"Still from the movie Ghosts of Mars (2001).\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/68odXfD8dF8Hxjxw2VCxwa.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/68odXfD8dF8Hxjxw2VCxwa.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Screen Gems)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0cd76258-9fe7-11f1-b5ee-8f4b4162f51e\">Chief Scientist at the Planetary Society, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.planetary.org\/profiles\/bruce-betts\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.planetary.org\/profiles\/bruce-betts\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr. Bruce Betts<\/a>, isn&#8217;t optimistic. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;re in a position to do global terraforming due to the technology and lack of resources. The papers indicate now you have only a tiny fraction of carbon dioxide, and then there&#8217;s just the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/property-and-sovereignty-in-space-countries-and-companies-face-potential-clashes-as-they-take-to-the-stars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/property-and-sovereignty-in-space-countries-and-companies-face-potential-clashes-as-they-take-to-the-stars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/property-and-sovereignty-in-space-countries-and-companies-face-potential-clashes-as-they-take-to-the-stars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">political and economic reality<\/a> of it. Any method I&#8217;ve ever heard of is really outrageously expensive over time, and you would have to have multi-year, multi-generational support for programs at a high level. You&#8217;d have the whole world having opinions on whether you could or should do it. Then there&#8217;s also the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sma.nasa.gov\/sma-disciplines\/planetary-protection\" data-url=\"https:\/\/sma.nasa.gov\/sma-disciplines\/planetary-protection\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">planetary protection<\/a> agreements that many countries have agreed to. But the lack of carbon dioxide is the showstopper, really.&#8221; Even in the movie, they&#8217;re still 10 years away from having air like we do on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mark Gallaway, an astronomer, science pundit, and founder of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.starlightstem.co.uk\/about-us\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.starlightstem.co.uk\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Starlight Planetarium<\/a>, also mentions the cost and carbon dioxide issues as major obstacles, as well as two other challenges that may make attempts to live on Mars near impossible. &#8220;There have been enclosed habitats we&#8217;ve built on Earth. The only way we could do 0.38 of a G is to have some kind of spin habitat and have people live there. So, without actually knowing what that surface gravity is going to do to us, it&#8217;s a bit tricky. We might find that they&#8217;re on Mars for a year, and when they come back, they can&#8217;t function anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0cd76334-9fe7-11f1-b674-db70e22ced56-1\">Recent studies about the state of Mars haven&#8217;t been too promising either. Betts views Bruce Jakosky and Christopher Edwards&#8217; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=92X1588396&amp;xcust=space_us_3395190951266279804&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41550-018-0529-6&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41550-018-0529-6\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored noopener nofollow\" data-hl-processed=\"skimlinks\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=92X1588396&amp;xcust=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41550-018-0529-6&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">2018 research paper<\/a>, where it explicitly states &#8220;terraforming Mars is not possible using present-day technology,&#8221; as the biggest reality check.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vanilla.futurecdn.net\/space\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Jakosky and Edwards paper about CO\u2082 makes me very negative,&#8221; Betts says. &#8220;There have been thoughts of using <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/could-future-astronauts-build-houses-on-mars-with-bacteria\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/could-future-astronauts-build-houses-on-mars-with-bacteria\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/could-future-astronauts-build-houses-on-mars-with-bacteria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exotic technologies<\/a>, such as nanorods and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/make-mars-habitable-with-silica-aerogel.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/make-mars-habitable-with-silica-aerogel.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/make-mars-habitable-with-silica-aerogel.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aerogel<\/a>, but even with the aerogel, I believe they&#8217;re talking about using it to create localized domes, and you&#8217;d create the interior of that and try to terraform it. It&#8217;s certainly more plausible than doing the whole planet, but still seems like [there are a lot of implications]. [&#8230;] People are coming up with new, nifty technologies, but I just don&#8217;t see how they can be implemented, even if they did work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ngbUdiJbyTQebsg8Laye8b.jpg\" alt=\"Still from the movie Ghosts of Mars (2001).\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ngbUdiJbyTQebsg8Laye8b.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ngbUdiJbyTQebsg8Laye8b.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Screen Gems)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0cd76406-9fe7-11f1-b2b4-3196adf8331e\">Science fiction tends to depict Mars as a possibility for human occupation, but Gallaway points out another big blow for any terraforming ambitions: &#8220;We&#8217;ve made recent discoveries that the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/mars\/food-grows-better-on-the-moon-than-on-mars-scientists-find\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/mars\/food-grows-better-on-the-moon-than-on-mars-scientists-find\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/mars\/food-grows-better-on-the-moon-than-on-mars-scientists-find\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">soil on Mars<\/a> is actually quite toxic to life. So the scene in &#8216;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/entertainment\/space-movies-shows\/the-martian-is-10-years-old-looking-back-at-sci-fis-answer-to-the-shawshank-redemption\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/entertainment\/space-movies-shows\/the-martian-is-10-years-old-looking-back-at-sci-fis-answer-to-the-shawshank-redemption\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/entertainment\/space-movies-shows\/the-martian-is-10-years-old-looking-back-at-sci-fis-answer-to-the-shawshank-redemption\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Martian<\/a>&#8216; where Mark Watney grows potatoes? That&#8217;s just not possible. It means if you&#8217;re going to colonize Mars, you&#8217;re going to have to bring all your topsoil, which is a big problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to all of this, there are the ethical dilemmas that need to be addressed. Astronomer, teacher, and author <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffreybennett.com\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jeffreybennett.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr. Jeffrey Bennett<\/a> wrote &#8220;Life in the Universe&#8221; along with Seth Shostak, Nicholas Schneider, and Meredith MacGregor.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>In the book, there&#8217;s a section that discusses introducing greenhouse gas to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martian atmosphere<\/a> in order for humans to walk around without a spacesuit. However, this leads to serious questions about the effects of colonization and whether humans have the right to fundamentally change another planet&#8217;s atmosphere and potentially wreck it for other <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/search-for-life\/we-finally-know-where-to-look-for-life-on-mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/search-for-life\/we-finally-know-where-to-look-for-life-on-mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/search-for-life\/we-finally-know-where-to-look-for-life-on-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">possible lifeforms already living there<\/a>. Remember, &#8220;it&#8217;s their planet\u2026 we are the aliens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GRogcDpxNSJvRJyeAX8a8b.jpg\" alt=\"Still from the movie Ghosts of Mars (2001).\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GRogcDpxNSJvRJyeAX8a8b.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GRogcDpxNSJvRJyeAX8a8b.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Screen Gems)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0cd764d8-9fe7-11f1-a19d-cb069f8266e6\">For Bennett, he questions whether terraforming Mars is even an option if humans can&#8217;t get their own house in order: &#8220;Given that we can&#8217;t even seem to keep Earth&#8217;s climate functioning the way we&#8217;d like it to \u2013 for example, global warming is making the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-climate-change-explained\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-climate-change-explained\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-climate-change-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climate<\/a> worse for humans and other life \u2013 I find it difficult to believe that our present level of knowledge would allow us to turn an inhospitable place like Mars into a livable world. Perhaps this may become possible in the future, but certainly not before we first learn how to take care of our home planet&#8217;s climate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, living on Mars isn&#8217;t possible at the moment, but &#8220;Ghosts of Mars&#8221; takes place in the future, so we still have time because who knows what scientific advancements await us? Alas, experts tend to agree that it&#8217;s unlikely to happen by 2176 at this current rate, though developments could happen: &#8220;I think that people will continue researching on the small scale of things you could do, but I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;re going to be any closer to terraforming Mars in reality by 2176 than we are now,&#8221; Betts says. Get to what we call an M-type <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"entertainment\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a>: [&#8230;] Get the platinum group metals out, sell those, then spin the asteroid up, and you can live on it \u2013 inside at 1G. Banks and his science fiction<\/a>, where virtually everybody is living in inhabitable orbital structures, because it&#8217;s easier to make the environment than it is to change it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hmm\u2026 Gallaway may have just pitched the perfect sequel. Yeah, &#8220;Ghosts of the Asteroid&#8221; sounds decent, doesn&#8217;t it?
