\n\tIf it wasn\u2019t for the yerba mate steaming up in front of her, Maia Reficco<\/a> might easily lose track of which city she\u2019s in.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI did five cities in five countries in five days,\u201d she says. \u201cI was in Monaco, Spain, New York, Mexico City and Buenos Aires, all in five days.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tNow back home in Buenos Aires, where she\u2019s stuck to living despite career pressures to move to the U.S., the Argentine actress and singer is more than happy with her busy schedule if it means getting to pursue both of her loves.<\/p>\n

\n\tReficco, who is 26, stars in Prime<\/a> Video original movie \u201cThe Last Sunrise,\u201d out Wednesday, in which she stars opposite Eva Longoria<\/a> and Fernando Lindez. The story follows Ry, whose typical teenage life has been turned upside down by her health battle. When the opportunity to travel to Majorca with her mother on a work trip arises, she is prepared to spend most of the time shut in at the hotel \u2014 until an encounter with a handsome local changes everything.<\/p>\n

\n\tReficco was interested from the moment she heard the word \u201cMajorca\u201d from her manager. She\u2019d just come off her Broadway run in \u201cHadestown,\u201d which was \u201cmy favorite job I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d and was wondering what would be next. The script landed in her inbox while on a road trip in Australia visiting her best friend.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI get really carsick. And I got the script and I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t read it right now,\u2019 but [my manager] was like \u2018read it,\u2019\u201d she recalls. \u201cI wanted to throw up because of being carsick, but I was so excited to finish the script.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDoing a romance wasn\u2019t necessarily top of mind for her next role, but it\u2019s a genre she\u2019s always been drawn to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs a woman, I think there\u2019s something so divinely feminine about doing romance that I was looking forward to finding the right one,\u201d she says. \u201cRomance has always been a genre that\u2019s been looked down upon because women liked it. It\u2019s always been the butt of a joke. I think there\u2019s something about how that is flipping now and it\u2019s becoming arguably the biggest genre in the world at the moment and competing against numbers from all these male-driven action films. And I think having romance take that spot is so sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAlongside promoting the film, Reficco is also releasing her own music<\/a>, a lifelong dream. Her first single, \u201cAmapola,\u201d was released Aug. 20, with the rest of the EP expected in September.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI describe it as music<\/a> is who I am and acting is what I love to do, because that\u2019s kind of how it is for me,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s completely indispensable for my happiness. Whether I sing in private or whether I sing for others, I\u2019m never going to change that because it really is. I don\u2019t feel fulfilled without it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWriting music, which she does mostly in Spanish, has helped her make sense of her career thus far, which came with success at a young age. When Reficco was 17, she landed the lead role in the Nickelodeon Latin America telenovela \u201cKally\u2019s Mashup,\u201d after auditioning with the Ariana Grande single \u201cDangerous Woman.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe way I perceived art and life obviously are very intertwined. And throughout the first years of my career and earlier on, I think I was very much mistaking stimuli for growth,\u201d Reficco says. \u201cI would put my self-worth and my life\u2019s north star in things that were really, really skewed. It was hard for me to be discerning about what things were worth my energy and what weren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHer EP, then, is a collection of songs that are \u201ceach their own little universe,\u201d which represent her search for her identity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI do think that emptiness made room for so much space. And now I feel so much richer in how I understand what I want and need and prioritize,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\n\tAhead, Reficco will be seen in \u201cBaton,\u201d actor Danny Ramirez\u2019s directorial debut, and plans to devote much of the coming months to music and sharing \u201cThe Last Sunrise.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI love being able to make people across the world connect with a story that might make them happy for two hours or that might make them emotional for two hours,\u201d she says. \u201cI do think there\u2019s something to be said about how we are all in desperate need for some escapism and love stories. At the end of the day, the human experience is about wanting to be loved and wanting to love.
