This information will undoubtedly save many animals\u2019 lives and prevent much human remorse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During evacuations, small animals such as cats, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, and gerbils should be placed securely in carriers (birds should be covered in such a way that still allows airflow but minimizes stress), and dogs should be microchipped, wearing ID tags with current contact information, and kept on a secure harness and leash. PETA urges people to consider investing in a collar with a GPS tracker, like those made by Fi and Tractive, for added security. Take enough food for your animals to last several days. Horses and other large animals should never be locked in stalls or otherwise confined, unable to flee the flames. If it\u2019s impossible to remove them, they should be freed so that they can attempt to escape and survive. Anyone who sees animals in danger or distress should assist if possible, but if they\u2019re unable to help, they should note their exact location and alert authorities immediately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents in areas affected by smoke and falling ash should\u00a0keep animals indoors\u00a0and avoid all outdoor activities, such as running with dogs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone who evacuates and intentionally abandons animals to fend for themselves may face charges of abandonment and cruelty to animals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787635810_250_image.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PETA\u2014whose motto reads, in part, that \u201canimals are not ours to abuse in any way\u201d\u2014points out that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/every-animal-is-someone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Every Animal Is Someone<\/a>\u00a0and offers free\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/every-animal-is-someone.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Empathy Kits<\/a>\u00a0for people who need a lesson in kindness.
