Since abuse allegations came to light in 2014<\/a>, Woody Allen has found refuge in scenic Europe in his later years, where he continues to crank out films with a vigor reminiscent of a man trying to outrun history\u2014whether that means past regrets, the memory of his superior works, a fear that his best days are truly behind him, or an attempt to establish a new and exciting career divorced from all of it. Funding for Allen\u2019s newer films has since come in fitful spurts and stops from agreeable countries that wish to see the director cast their locales in his particularly nostalgic autumnal light, investments that have, if nothing else, yielded some of his most languid, forgettable works to date. Now, Deadline reports<\/a> that Spain, the backdrop to Allen\u2019s Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and Rifkin\u2019s Festival (2021), is ponying up $1.7 million in cash for the latest untitled feature from the 90-year-old director, which is set to begin shooting in Madrid in October. However, this $1.7 million falls well short of the $14 million Deadline previously reported<\/a> Allen\u2019s film would require for its \u201clargely English-language\u201d production; the director and his producers are currently raising more cash.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Details about Allen\u2019s latest film are being kept under wraps, as is its reportedly \u201chigh-profile\u201d cast, a list of actors who are doubtlessly preparing for the scores of side-eye they\u2019re about to get on social media. Deadline does note that the financial agreement between Allen and the Madrid regional government, which is footing a portion of the bill, requires Allen to shoot in Madrid and include \u201cMadrid\u201d in the title.
