But circumstances have now changed, with the country entering a new phase of peace.

Therefore, “we announce the end of the mission of the Syrian Democratic Forces and announce with full responsibility its dissolution as an independent military force”, he said.

‘Hugely significant moment’

The SDF was once the main partner of the United States in Syria as it battled ISIL. But after the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Washington formed close ties with the new government in Damascus, led by al-Sharaa.

Al Jazeera’s Heidi Pett, reporting from Damascus, said the SDF’s dissolution was a “hugely significant moment for Syria”.

She said the SDF’s fortunes shifted with Washington’s backing of al-Sharaa’s government and that the integration process had taken more than seven months due to unresolved questions about the group’s heavy weapons and the future of the YPJ, the women fighters.

“The YPJ had argued that they should be integrated into the Ministry of Defence, that they are professional soldiers – they fought against ISIS and want to continue being soldiers,” she said. “But Damascus was only offering them the option of joining the Ministry of Interior as police officers. So these unresolved questions were part of the reason the dissolution wasn’t formally announced until now.”

Still, questions remain about how the process will play out in northeastern Syria, she added.

Under the 50-year rule of the Assad dynasty, Kurds were marginalised, with many denied citizenship. Abdi, in his address in Damascus, stressed that al-Sharaa also recognised the preservation of the Kurds’ right to education in the Kurdish language. He added that they would work to implement education in the Kurdish language during the current year.

“We want to build a new Syria for all its people – the Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen and Assyrians – a unified and stable Syria that protects the future of its children and ensures a dignified life for its youth,” he said.

Washington’s envoy to Syria hailed US President Donald Trump’s role in the SDF’s merger with the Syrian state.

Tom Barrack said Trump’s “far-sighted leadership” had opened the path for the SDF’s orderly integration. He also said the deal, in addition to recognising the Kurdish language in education, had secured “substantive roles” in the Syrian government for Abdi and the head of the Kurdish-led administration in northeastern Syria, Ilham Ahmed.

There was no confirmation from Damascus on the appointments, but according to local media reports, Abdi will be appointed as an adviser to al-Sharaa, while Ahmed will be appointed to the administration of Parliament.

Barrack said the move “pays due respect to their leadership, the sacrifices of our Kurdish partners, and the constructive contribution they have made to regional stability”.

‘Ripple effect’

Analysts, meanwhile, said the SDF’s disbanding would help lay the ground for a united Syria.

“I applaud both sides, especially the government, for seeking the least confrontational path since the collapse of the Assad regime,” said Saleh Mubarak, a Syrian-American professor and writer.

The move will “have a ripple effect on other rebels, in the south and probably in the west, that Syria will remain as one country – acknowledging and celebrating the diversity we have in every aspect: religion, sect, language, race”, he told Al Jazeera.

But while al-Sharaa’s government has pledged to recognise Kurdish rights, including linguistic rights, it has “so far fallen short” of expectations in northeastern Syria, Mubarak said.

Still, “there is definitely some reason to celebrate here, in terms of this agreement getting to this point without any major issues”, he said. “But this is not the end of the story. And there’s a lot of expectation on the part of the average Kurd that this is going to be a new era for everyone in Syria.”

The dissolution of the SDF came a day after the US removed Syria from its “state sponsors of terrorism” list, a decades-old designation that came with severe economic restrictions. It marked another step in closer ties between the two countries after the ouster of al-Assad.

Al-Sharaa had hailed the move, saying, “Syria shakes off a dark stain and tears away a painful chapter of its past to embark on a path of development, reconstruction and rebuilding.”

The leader of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which spearheaded the fight against ISIL (ISIS) in Syria,…

[3
159885,1153,42,113888,47,43,238,4713,20766,40,38,41,39
post-596286","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-armed-groups","tag-conflict","tag-headlines","tag-isil-isis","tag-middle-east","tag-news","tag-politics","tag-syria","tag-syrias-war","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories
["GET
