\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExplanation: What a sight to behold, when a night sky became filled with colors that appeared to rain over the Sk\u00f3gafoss waterfall in Iceland. This image was taken in a single\u00a05 second exposure<\/a>\u00a0by the photographer in April 2025. Seeing an\u00a0aurora<\/a>\u00a0is on many people’s bucket lists. But it is not easy. It requires high\u00a0solar activity<\/a>, dark and clear skies, and usually a viewing location at high latitude. That makes the northern lights more easily seen than the corresponding\u00a0southern lights<\/a>, simply because there is less landmass in the Southern Hemisphere, especially\u00a0around the Antarctic Circle<\/a>. Auroras are caused by charged particles from the\u00a0solar wind<\/a>\u00a0that are captured by the Earth’s\u00a0magnetosphere<\/a>\u00a0and guided by the magnetic field to a region close to one of the poles, where they\u00a0collide with gas particles in the\u00a0atmosphere<\/a>. Different colors indicate interactions with different gases at\u00a0different altitudes<\/a>, like oxygen (red<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0green<\/a>) and nitrogen (blue<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0pink<\/a>).<\/p>\n
