{"id":598917,"date":"2026-08-28T19:02:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T19:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/598917\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T19:02:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T19:02:13","slug":"ai-should-soon-reduce-health-care-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/598917\/","title":{"rendered":"AI Should Soon Reduce Health-Care Costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/anthropic-ceo-dario-amodei-ai-public-opinion-cure-cancer-2026-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">posted<\/a> on X, \u201c[S]aying that AI will cure cancer is more a clich\u00e9 than it is inspiring, and most people think it is deceptive.\u201d He conceded that \u201cwe haven\u2019t yet delivered on our big promises to benefit the world.\u201d He\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p>While the invention of useful AI tools has dramatically elevated scientists\u2019 confidence that they\u2019ll eventually find cures, the task is daunting. The <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2026-05-chemistry-aware-ai-generate-millions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">number<\/a> of plausible new biological molecules is greater than the quantity of water molecules in the world\u2019s oceans. As large and powerful as current gigawatt-scale AI data centers are, the challenge of speeding up discovery is so monumental that it invokes the classic movie line, \u201cYou\u2019re going to need a bigger boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"cta-heading\" style=\"line-height: 28px;\">Finally, a reason to check your email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cta-subheading\" style=\"line-height: 22px;\">Sign up for our free newsletter today.<\/p>\n<p>This summer, Science <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/blog-post\/so-how-ai-drug-discovery-doing-really\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">assessed the state<\/a> of AI-centric drug discovery, concluding: \u201cAlthough a wide variety of AI methods have been developed, applied and benchmarked, evidence of their clinically relevant impact is, so far, disappointingly limited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And even after we find a promising new drug, real-world clinical trials take time. Nonetheless, AI\u2019s potential impact on health care is one of its most consequential promises. To see where, one only needs to follow the money.<\/p>\n<p>Cost is a key reason that health care has become a political lightning rod. Health-care spending now accounts for nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthsystemtracker.org\/chart-collection\/how-much-is-health-spending-expected-to-grow\/#Total%20health%20spending,%20by%20service%20type,%202018-2023;%20projected%202024-2033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">20 percent<\/a> of the U.S. economy, up from just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/Research-Statistics-Data-and-Systems\/Statistics-Trends-and-Reports\/NationalHealthExpendData\/Downloads\/HistoricalNHEPaper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">5 percent<\/a> in 1960, when hospitals first began to use computers. Moreover, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/06\/business\/economy\/health-care-hiring-labor-market.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">15 percent<\/a> of the U.S. labor force works in health care, exceeding employment in retail and dwarfing manufacturing jobs.<\/p>\n<p>How could AI tools make a difference with these burdensome costs? Divide health care into three general categories: 1) discovery\u2014the search for drugs and the scientific study of how and why biological things happen; 2) decision-making by doctors, aided by diagnostic tools; and 3) the deployment of solutions through the ecosystem of hospitals, clinics, and other providers.<\/p>\n<p>The combined <a href=\"https:\/\/officeofbudget.od.nih.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">federal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/265085\/research-and-development-expenditure-us-pharmaceutical-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">private<\/a> spending on discovery is less than 5 percent of total national health-care outlays. Front-line <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaleconomics.com\/view\/physician-pay-makes-up-about-8-of-total-healthcare-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">physicians<\/a> and diagnostic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandviewresearch.com\/industry-analysis\/us-in-vitro-diagnostics-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">machines<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceandmedicinegroup.com\/resource\/the-business-of-diagnostic-imaging-hospitals-imaging-centers-urgent-care-and-mobile-sites-what-sets-each-apart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">services<\/a> all combined consume under 20 percent of total outlays. The rest is accounted for by the vast infrastructures of hospitals and clinics\u2014the massive bureaucratic supply chain that delivers the care, services, and cures. Meanwhile, according to the American Hospital Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/finance\/administrative-costs-now-eat-25-to-35-of-us-health-spending-aha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">administrative overhead<\/a> alone consumes some 25 to 35 percent across overall health-care spending.<\/p>\n<p>It was administrative bloat, not more money going to research scientists and doctors, that led to the inflated health-care costs of recent decades. While the number of doctors has roughly doubled since 1980, administrative employment jumped over <a href=\"https:\/\/amomentinhealth.substack.com\/p\/doctors-administrators-and-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sixfold<\/a>. No surprise that health care became the Number One category for job creation.<\/p>\n<p>Improving the productivity of a massive bureaucratic administrative system hardly arouses excitement. But making that sector more efficient offers the best opportunities for containing costs and freeing up money. As it happens, AI can far more easily discover ways to perform administrative tasks than discover new cures.<\/p>\n<p>AI is already reducing some of the administrative overhead. On the front lines at doctors\u2019 offices, Stanford\u2019s AI Index project <a href=\"https:\/\/hai.stanford.edu\/assets\/files\/ai_index_report_2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reports<\/a> that the most widespread adoption of AI clinical tools so far is the \u201cAI scribe.\u201d The AI scribe listens to doctor-patient conversations and automatically generates the necessary clinical documentation. It has brought meaningful and documented reductions in unproductive note-writing time. It arguably also improves the opportunity for sociability since doctors aren\u2019t preoccupied with typing on a computer.<\/p>\n<p>But for both patients and physicians, AI\u2019s more exciting promise is radically improving diagnostics, one of the oldest and biggest challenges in medicine. For one example of what\u2019s coming, check out this tantalizing, AI-generated <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/midjourney\/status\/2067421950314688759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">video demonstration<\/a> of a new full-body imaging system. The Midjourney Medical ultrasonic imager produces a whole-body image, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobihealthnews.com\/news\/midjourney-enters-healthcare-60-second-full-body-imaging-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">company says<\/a>, 100 times faster than an MRI with competitive resolution. Hyperbole aside, there is every reason to believe that this is the future for medical imaging.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, AI is also <a href=\"https:\/\/netchoice.org\/ais-transformative-power-a-revolution-in-medical-imaging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">improving<\/a> the operation and diagnostics of all the iconic advances of the twentieth century in detection and diagnosis equipment, physics-based machines (x-rays, MRIs, ultrasound), and chemical\/biological analyzers.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first AI applications, in pathology, is now well-established as a valuable clinical amplifier, or assistant. And the early trope that AI would <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalpathologyassociation.org\/blog\/the-imposter-syndrome-when-ai-pathologists-become-indistinguishable-from-their-human-counterparts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">eliminate the need<\/a> for human pathologists has been firmly debunked. Instead, it improves the efficiency and accuracy of pathologists. AI can and will perform plenty of tasks better than humans, but many of the most complex ones require the magic of collaboration. Johns Hopkins, for example, developed an AI-powered sepsis-prediction system and deployed it across a dozen-plus hospitals, achieving significant <a href=\"https:\/\/hai.stanford.edu\/assets\/files\/ai_index_report_2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reductions<\/a> in sepsis mortality.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to diagnostics, the Holy Grail is a kind of Swiss Army knife of imagers and sensors all in one machine\/system\u2014a Star Trek kind of tricorder\u2014to yield a rapid and specific diagnosis. Maybe someday.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, AI tools are particularly adept at resolving and rationalizing volumes of messy data typically inherent to natural systems. A review of the technical literature and the venture capital landscape reveals an explosion of activity chasing specific AI medical applications. This is precisely the indicator that rational forecasts are based on, pointing to the inevitability of meaningful advances in health-care productivity.<\/p>\n<p>But the immediate impacts of AI will be in workflows\u2014the boring, critical, administrative stuff. After diagnosis comes the heavy lift of coordinating care across organizations and professionals, along with the unavoidable administrative work of oversight, compliance, tracking, and insurance. It entails dozens of discrete steps, actions, records, and requirements. And every workflow is different and personal. Making workflows easier, transparent, faster, and cheaper, is home-turf territory for AI.<\/p>\n<p>If touting the cancer cure isn\u2019t a get out-of-jail card for today\u2019s beleaguered data centers, just try selling the idea of improving workflows. It\u2019s too late to rename data centers, say, \u201cMedical AI Diagnostic &amp; Imaging Centers,\u201d or \u201cDrug Discovery Centers.\u201d Half-joking aside, this is serious stuff. AI data centers are now a third rail in American politics.
