On July 2, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced it would stop manufacturing physical discs<\/a> for its PlayStation consoles starting in 2028. Ever since, the company has been swimming upstream against a torrent of critics.<\/p>\n

Since the announcement, nearly every post to the company\u2019s official X account has been met with hordes of replies stating some version of \u201cno disc, no buy\u201d or \u201cgreed has no limits\u201d (a riff on PlayStation\u2019s \u201cplay has no limits\u201d slogan). During an Aug. 18 preview for the upcoming action role-playing game Phantom Blade Zero, critics again swarmed the YouTube chat<\/a> with CD emojis and pleas of \u201cGIVE US OUR DISCS.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Sony sends out reminders that digital purchases are licenses<\/a> to access games, rather than transactions that grant ownership, some critics have dug back into Sony\u2019s past, dredging up a 2013 ad<\/a> and satirical response to rival Microsoft\u2019s convoluted game-sharing system.
