{"id":599659,"date":"2026-08-29T13:00:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T13:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/599659\/"},"modified":"2026-08-29T13:00:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T13:00:09","slug":"nasa-space-telescope-set-to-launch-after-surviving-trump-budget-cuts-nasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/599659\/","title":{"rendered":"Nasa space telescope set to launch after surviving Trump budget cuts | Nasa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">A $4.3bn space telescope that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> tried to kill is set to lift off from Florida early on Sunday as Nasa embarks on the next stage of its quest to unlock the secrets of the universe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The Nancy Grace Roman space <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/roman-space-telescope\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">telescope<\/a> survived two rounds of proposed White House budget cuts, and will embark on a million-mile journey into deep space from a launchpad at the Kennedy Space Center at 7.26am ET, barring late technical issues or intervention from Florida\u2019s notoriously capricious summer weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Searching chiefly for exoplanets and clues about planetary formation, it is set to join the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes in the annals of Nasa\u2019s storied history of space exploration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But as next-generation equipment almost 10 years in the making, the Roman telescope, named for the space agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-telescope-named-for-mother-of-hubble-nancy-grace-roman\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first chief of astronomy<\/a>, who died in 2018, is many times more powerful than Hubble and will work to enhance the output of its stablemates, both of which continue to operate.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, Nasa\u2019s first chief of astronomy. Photograph: NASA\/AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">According to Nasa, its 300-megapixel infrared camera will give Roman the same sharpness and resolution as Hubble, but with a field of view at least 100 times larger. The agency says each image will capture a patch of sky about 1.5 times bigger than the apparent size of a full moon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Roman also contains a specialized instrument known as a coronagraph that blocks glare from stars and makes it easier to photograph planets around them in detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Nasa said it expected the images would reveal \u201cgiant worlds that are older, colder, and in closer orbits than the hot, young super-Jupiters direct imaging has mainly revealed so far\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Roman\u2019s destination is Lagrange point 2, a \u201cparking spot\u201d in space about one million miles from Earth, where it will operate in the same complex sun-Earth orbit as Webb, though the two telescopes will remain far apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It is not entirely a successor to Hubble and Webb, which were launched in 1990 and 2021, respectively, but was designed to support and advance their missions, while making discoveries of its own.<\/p>\n<p>Technicians connecting the inner and outer segments of Nasa\u2019s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on 25 November 2025, at Nasa\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Photograph: Jolearra Tshiteya\/NASA\/AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Nasa said Roman\u2019s large panoramas would \u201cuncover interesting targets that Hubble could follow up on using infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light to offer a more comprehensive view\u201d, while Webb \u201ccan then use its larger mirror and more powerful vision to deliver even more detailed, ultra-sharp observations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Roman, meanwhile, can view regions around objects Hubble or Webb observe \u201cto offer context\u201d. Its imagery, which Nasa expects will first come in early 2027 after months of calibration and tests in the telescope\u2019s final orbit, will be made immediately public, allowing the agency, professional researchers and amateur astronomers an unprecedented opportunity for analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cFrom objects in our outer solar system and exploding stars, to growing black holes and galaxies by the billions, very little will be beyond Roman\u2019s reach,\u201d Nasa said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/roman-space-telescope\/9-things-to-know-about-nasas-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">online explanation<\/a> of the telescope\u2019s initial five-year mission, which could be extended to 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cRoman will pair a large field of view with crisp infrared vision to scan vast, deep swaths of sky. This flagship mission is designed to help astronomers explore dark matter, dark energy, and planets outside our solar system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Julie McEnery, Nasa\u2019s senior project scientist for the Roman mission, said the need for it was conceived at the end of the last century, although it was only in 2016 that Nasa began the development stage, and 2020 before it finally approved the entire project and commenced construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cOne of the motivations for Roman was the discovery that our universe is not just expanding, but that expansion is accelerating,\u201d she said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/podcasts\/curious-universe\/roman-deepdive-podcast\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an interview on Thursday<\/a> with Sophia Roberts, an astrophysics video producer at Nasa\u2019s Goddard space flight center in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt\u2019s like if you were to throw a ball in the air, and instead of the ball coming back down, it just keeps shooting away. There\u2019s something really fundamental that we don\u2019t understand about the nature of our universe itself, and Roman is purpose-built to address and provide the data that we need to address these questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">If the US president had his way, Roman would never have made it to the launchpad.
