Mercedes’ hospitality unit was packed for the media session with the Italian teenager and, to add to the occasion, he was also allowed to get behind the wheel of the W15 a day later for his first F1 practice session.

We all know how that ended. Driven by a combination of youthful enthusiasm and the desire to make an immediate impression on home soil, Antonelli went off at the Parabolica after just 10 minutes. Antonelli’s crash registered an impact of no less than 52G, after which Wolff would acknowledge that it had been a mistake to give him his practice debut at Monza of all places.

The Austrian joked that the car looked like a Lego box that had been dropped on the floor, but on a more serious note said that this was exactly the sort of thing that could be expected from a rookie and that the team also had to look at itself over that decision.

Antonelli crashed at Monza on his debut F1 outing

Photo by: Zak Mauger / Motorsport Images

“These moments, they happen and they will continue to happen next year, but there will also be a lot of highlights,” Wolff said at the time. “I think what we’ve seen today was that we might have a problem with slowing him down rather than making him faster, because from what we’ve seen from one and a half laps is astonishing.”

Two years later, the picture looks very different and Antonelli has already made enormous progress. Yes, 2025 played out exactly as Wolff had predicted in the quote above: brilliant moments interspersed with rookie mistakes and weekends when things proved very difficult.

This season, however, Antonelli has made a step forward that even surprised Wolff, as he admitted when asked by Autosport. The 54-year-old team boss called it one of the biggest surprises of his F1 career, which is saying something given everything Wolff has experienced in this paddock.

“I think he just needed the winter to process it. Why was it good? Why was it bad? What do I need to do? And that means that it just comes down to driving and preparation” Toto Wolff

With the benefit of hindsight, however, he can explain that enormous step.

“When I analyse it and ask myself what are the reasons that he had such a good reputation in the junior formulas and karting, I think it’s his processing power,” Wolff reflected.

“I think he just needed the winter to process it. Why was it good? Why was it bad? What do I need to do? And that means that it just comes down to driving and preparation, rather than being a deer in front of the headlights, like in 2025, thinking what’s happening? But yeah, it’s still one of the very nice surprises.”

Antonelli finished 169 points behind team-mate Russell in 2025, but in 2026 the Italian holds a 59-point advantage

Photo by: Mark Thompson / Getty Images

Because Antonelli has now experienced everything once already, he is, in Wolff’s words, no longer ‘a deer in the headlights’. The version of Antonelli who now leads the championship by 59 points is a much more experienced driver and person than the youngster who crashed so heavily at the Parabolica two years ago.

Yet there is still that enormous pressure in Italy. Admittedly, even more of that pressure rests on Ferrari, but Wolff has also spoken about it frequently in relation to Antonelli since the start of this year.

It was no coincidence that after Antonelli’s maiden F1 win in China, Wolff told the Italian press what the newspaper headlines should be the following day: piedi per terra – both feet on the ground.

According to the Mercedes team principal, nobody would benefit from all the hype, but that is precisely the kind of hype that threatens to build now that Antonelli is racing on home soil for the first time with a potentially race-winning car.

Despite Antonelli being considerably more mature now, the added pressure of racing at home still carries the risk of a repeat of the 2024 scenario. The grid penalty, however, has taken much of that out of the equation.

That was also strikingly apparent during Antonelli’s Italian media session ahead of the Monza weekend. Without the grid penalty, all questions from the national press would understandably have been about a potential victory in front of his home crowd.

An engine change means a grid penalty for Antonelli this weekend

This time, the first two questions were as follows:

Have you got a clearer idea of what kind of result you can target this weekend, starting from the back of the grid?

Qualifying won’t be particularly significant for you. Given how important the tow is at this track, do you think you could be asked to help George?

It completely changes the nature of all the conversations and takes the pressure away, which could prove to be a blessing in disguise. That said, it must of course be stressed that the decision to take the penalty at Monza is primarily driven by strategic considerations.

By replacing all the components now, Antonelli says he will only have to take a five-place grid penalty in order to use the ADUO upgrade later on

Overtaking is relatively easy here – probably even unnaturally easy this year – while the upcoming races are not suited to starting from the back: Madrid is a big unknown, Baku is chaotic, Malaysia is another question mark on its F1 return, and overtaking is virtually impossible during the sprint weekend in Singapore.

Moreover, Mercedes is already anticipating the ADUO upgrade that will be introduced in October. By replacing all the components now, Antonelli says he will only have to take a five-place grid penalty in order to use the ADUO upgrade later on.

Those are naturally the main reasons for having Antonelli start from the back at the Temple of Speed – although with the 2026 cars, perhaps the ‘Temple of Losing Speed’ would be more appropriate – but the fact that the pressure has been taken off before the young Italian has even driven a single metre this weekend can at the very least be described as a welcome bonus.

A smiling Antonelli arriving in the Monza paddock

Photo by: Simon Galloway / LAT Images via Getty Images

We want to hear from you!

Let us know what you would like to see from us in the future.

            Take our survey

– The Autosport.com Team

It is a story the Mercedes press officers can still laugh about: two years ago, Toto Wolff more…

[9
273255,273254,273256,180,85,46,181,11632,105
post-604668","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-andrea-kimi-antonelli","tag-antonelliu2019s-italian-gp-grid-penalty-could-be-a-blessing-in-disguise","tag-autodromo-nazionale-monza","tag-formula-1","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-italian-gp","tag-mercedes","tag-sports
["GET
