On 4 September 1976, the tune that has long been regarded as the band\u2019s signature <\/a>reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and stayed there for six weeks \u2013 their fourth UK number one after hits \u201cWaterloo\u201d, \u201cMamma Mia\u201d and \u201cFernando\u201d. <\/p>\n At the time the song was being recorded, as part of their fourth studio album Arrival, the band were under pressure due to a slow creative period following their 1974 Eurovision triumph with \u201cWaterloo\u201d \u2013 recording sessions were frequently interrupted by promotional obligations. <\/p>\n They finally recorded \u201cDancing Queen\u201d \u2013 their first attempt at disco \u2013 in August 1975. In his authorised biography Melancholy Undercover: The Book of Abba by Jan Gradvall, who conducted new interviews with bandmembers Bj\u00f6rn Ulvaeus<\/a>, Benny Andersson<\/a>, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha F\u00e4ltskog, Gradvall said the inspiration for the famous rhythm came from two sources.<\/p>\n \u201cOne was George McCrae\u2019s \u2018Rock Your Baby\u2019, one of the first disco recordings, a song that had been released the year before and which the members of Abba had heard many times at Alexandra,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n \u201cThe other was the New Orleans rhythm on the 1972 album Dr John\u2019s Gumbo, which Roger Palm had been listening to.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThese two templates were American,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut when Abba plays disco there is an unmistakably European sound to it. The song opens with Benny running his finger over the keys on the Bolin grand piano, then the song starts \u2013 and it is always slower than you remember.\u201d<\/p>\n The original working title for \u201cDancing Queen\u201d, he revealed, was \u201cBoogaloo\u201d \u2013 the title we know and love today was suggested by the band\u2019s manager, Stig Anderson. <\/p>\n We couldn\u2019t believe how good it sounded<\/p>\n Bj\u00f6rn Ulvaeus<\/p>\n When the recording was completed, Ulvaeus and Andersson understood that they had achieved something special: \u201cThey went home late that night, ready to play it for their respective partners.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI cried when I heard it,\u2019 Lyngstad recalled. \u201cI thought it was so incredibly beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n F\u00e4ltskog was asleep when Ulvaeus returned home and he \u201cdidn\u2019t want to wake her\u201d, so he went to his sister\u2019s home instead: \u201cI played it for her over and over,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe couldn\u2019t believe how good it sounded.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cDancing Queen\u201d was released in 1976 as the lead single from Arrival and soon became a global hit, topping the charts in the US (as their only No 1 in the States) as well as the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Norway.<\/p>\n It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015 and is consistently ranked as one of the greatest pop songs of all time. <\/p>\n Of course, its innate catchiness helped secure its success, but it was also the misty-eyed, nostalgia-seeped tone of the lyrics, casting the listener as someone gazing back on their lost youth and putting them right back in that moment: \u201cYou\u2019re the dancing queen\/ Young and sweet\/ Only seventeen.\u201d<\/p>\n Indeed, \u201cDancing Queen\u201d commands so much respect that it has won over grizzled punks and rock veterans, too. Bono has covered the track during U2 concerts, as have Metallica\u2019s Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo. Elvis Costello borrowed the piano chords for his song, \u201cOliver\u2019s Army\u201d. Then-prime minister Theresa May notoriously, regrettably, danced to it onstage for a keynote conference speech in 2018.<\/p>\n Speaking to The Guardian, Judy Craymer, who came up with the hit stage show and film Mamma Mia!, suggested the show\u2019s success had helped pass on Abba\u2019s music down the generations. <\/p>\n \u201cAn 89-year-old would say, \u2018That\u2019s our song,\u2019 but children can learn it, too, almost like a nursery rhyme, and it\u2019s very attractive to them,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n![\"Bjorn](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ee1074a590378b72eb8972d80cf29d13Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzEyNTEwMzk2-2.67127297.jpg\")
