Gouliermis)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-f43490b4-a7ce-11f1-85e8-4df9d8707b1d\">About 160,000 light-years away lies one of our Milky Way&#8217;s little galactic neighbors: <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25450-large-magellanic-cloud.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25450-large-magellanic-cloud.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25450-large-magellanic-cloud.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Large Magellanic Cloud<\/a> (LMC). And thanks to a new observing program, the Hubble Space Telescope has provided us with an intricate image of a nebula in the LMC. The surprising part? There&#8217;s a giant void at the center. Scientists call it a &#8220;superbubble.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-d0b872a2-a7d0-11f1-b1ef-73df40f57704\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0a33b5fa-a7d1-11f1-8ac5-eb44968fd05a\">What you&#8217;re seeing in this image is a nebula within the LMC known as LHA 120-N44, or simply N44. It&#8217;s located in the constellation of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spiral-galaxy-dances-dorado-hubble-photo\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spiral-galaxy-dances-dorado-hubble-photo\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spiral-galaxy-dances-dorado-hubble-photo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dorado<\/a> and, like a classic nebula, is the site of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a> being born at a noticeably rapid rate.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0a33b5fa-a7d1-11f1-8ac5-eb44968fd05a-1\">But of course, what really can&#8217;t be missed is the huge hole at the center of N44&#8217;s dusty tendrils \u2014 this is the &#8220;superbubble,&#8221; and its dimensions are staggering. NASA says it&#8217;s about 210 by 140 light-years across \u2014 a truly unimaginable size, considering the distance between our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sun<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43-pluto-the-ninth-planet-that-was-a-dwarf.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43-pluto-the-ninth-planet-that-was-a-dwarf.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43-pluto-the-ninth-planet-that-was-a-dwarf.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pluto<\/a> isn&#8217;t even a single light-year.<\/p>\n<p>One <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">light-year<\/a>, the distance light travels in a year, is about 6 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-d0b87342-a7d0-11f1-89e1-b58a08c46092\"\/>Why is it noteworthy?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0a33b67c-a7d1-11f1-9ae1-ed90654f316a\">The superbubble is a bit of a mystery, but one theory of why it exists is that stars at the center of the bubble could have undergone <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supernova explosions<\/a> or have released stellar winds that swept away gas in the nebula. This could have resulted in a &#8220;void,&#8221; as NASA calls it, surrounded by a gaseous shell. That would explain away the image we see pretty well, but there will likely be studies dedicated to refining that story.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Of note, in that shell around the superbubble, stars continue to form and show themselves as beautiful little specks across the watercolor-like landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Something else interesting about this image is that N44 is what&#8217;s known as an &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nebula-definition-types\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nebula-definition-types\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nebula-definition-types\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emission nebula<\/a>,&#8221; meaning the gas you see has been energized by stars in the area. This enhances the luminescent quality of the portrait.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vanilla.futurecdn.net\/space\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This is because the energization process, or ionization to be specific, generates ionized gas that ultimately must cool down. During that cooling, it goes from a higher energy state to a lower energy state and thus releases some energy. This energy loss causes N44 to glow brightly, creating the beautiful scene we see.<\/p>\n<p>The reason scientists have used the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> to study N44 is this particular nebula offers good conditions to study star formation and evolution. As a matter of fact, Hubble managed to survey nearly half a million stars in and around the cluster, 30,000 of which are in the very early stages of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>N44 has been a major topic of interest for quite some time. For instance, it made headlines in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/hubble-space-telescope-superbubble-nebula-image\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/hubble-space-telescope-superbubble-nebula-image\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/hubble-space-telescope-superbubble-nebula-image\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2021<\/a> as well as in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/surprisingly-bright-superbubble\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/surprisingly-bright-superbubble\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2012<\/a> \u2014 both times due to Hubble&#8217;s eye yet again \u2014 and observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory led to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/surprisingly-bright-superbubble\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/surprisingly-bright-superbubble\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2011 paper<\/a> that discusses supernova shock waves and other phenomena shaping the nebula and its cavity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This nebula is named LHA 120-N44, or N44 for short, and it\u2019s located in the constellation Dorado.
