From the garden of their Georgian townhouse in Bath in the late 18th century, a brother and sister made a series of extraordinary astronomical discoveries.<\/p>\n
A new art show in the house where the siblings \u2013 William and Caroline Herschel \u2013 worked and lived highlights their pioneering spirit and their domestic arrangements.<\/p>\n

The Irish artist Grace Weir<\/a>, who created the exhibition in what is now the Herschel Museum of Astronomy<\/a>, said she was deeply interested in the science that went on at the house, including the discovery of the planet Uranus, and fascinated that it took place in such a cosy environment.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is a home,\u201d Weir said. \u201cScience does not take place in a vacuum. They would have had conversations about their discoveries across the dining table.\u201d<\/p>\n One of her artworks, On the Construction of Heavens, was inspired by William Herschel\u2019s drawing of the Milky Way in 1785.<\/p>\n Weir has had a copy of the drawing embroidered on to an antique linen tablecloth, which is laid over the family dining table. \u201cWilliam and Caroline must have spoken about the shape of the Milky Way right here,\u201d Weir said. \u201cThat would have been an unusual thing to talk about back then.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2018They would have had conversations about their discoveries across the dining table,\u2019 says Weir. Photograph: Adrian Sherratt\/The Guardian<\/p>\n In the basement workshop, where William Herschel built his own telescopes, Weir has installed an LED digital counter that records the distance of Uranus from the Earth as it changes.<\/p>\n A key element of the show is to make sure Caroline Herschel gets her share of the credit for the pair\u2019s advances in science.<\/p>\n Detail of a print of Caroline Herschel.<\/p>\n William Herschel was a self-taught amateur astronomer who came to Bath from Germany in 1777. His sister followed, initially as a housekeeper.<\/p>\n She quickly became his assistant, recording his findings, helping him with calculations, keeping his telescopes in order but then made discoveries of her own, finding eight comets and becoming the first woman in England<\/a> to be paid as an astronomer.<\/p>\n One of the most striking pieces Weir has created is a tribute to Caroline Herschel\u2019s comet-spotting abilities. Called An Imperfect Account, it features a piece of meteorite and a piece of obsidian in the shape of one of Caroline\u2019s worry beads.<\/p>\n Weir said: \u201cWilliam had to persuade her mother to let her come to Bath. He recognised her intelligence and once she got here, they were incredibly collaborative. Weir said people were losing the art of observing closely. \u201cThe Herschels were masters of long looking, something we are losing by scrolling,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Amy Frost, a senior curator at Bath Preservation Trust, said it was the first time in the museum\u2019s history that contemporary site-specific artworks had been integrated. \u201cIt\u2019s really exciting for us \u2013 it feels like a thread being created through time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n The exhibition, called The As-Yet Unseen (a quote by William Herschel predicting the discovery of the planet Neptune), runs from 5 September until 3 January 2027. A second exhibition studying the work in photography of William\u2019s son, John Herschel, also runs until January.
