{"id":607893,"date":"2026-09-06T18:40:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T18:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/607893\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T18:40:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T18:40:11","slug":"cult-of-male-genius-holding-female-film-makers-back-says-woman-unknown-director-movies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/607893\/","title":{"rendered":"Cult of male genius holding female film-makers back, says Woman Unknown director | Movies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The enduring cult of male genius is keeping down female film-makers, one of the only two female directors in the running for the top prize at this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/venicefilmfestival\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venice film festival<\/a> has warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI\u2019ve never ever read an article where a female director is promoted as a genius,\u201d said the Danish-Egyptian director May el-Toukhy, whose film Woman Unknown has been selected for the Golden Lion competition on the Lido this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt\u2019s not that I think I am one, but it\u2019s just interesting that this is so systemic,\u201d she added. \u201cAll of us are responsible for changing that discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">El-Toukhy\u2019s post-second world war period drama was the only film by a woman in the main competition when the line-up was announced in July. Since then, the festival directors have added the documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2026\/aug\/24\/gaza-documentary-produced-by-the-guardian-to-receive-world-premiere-at-venice-film-festival\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NAZA<\/a>, which is co-directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor and produced by the Guardian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">A competition prize at Europe\u2019s top festivals, Cannes, Venice and Berlin, is seen as a major door-opener for films seeking distribution deals around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Those in the running for the top gong at the 83rd edition of the oldest film showcase include such feted veterans as Werner Herzog, Paul Schrader, Nanni Moretti, Martin McDonagh and Danny Boyle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cAfter MeToo, all of us were really aware of this gender imbalance,\u201d said el-Toukhy at a press conference on Sunday. \u201cSomething has happened over the course of the last couple of years, but we\u2019re kind of returning to what it used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">She added: \u201cIt\u2019s a structural problem that I have encountered throughout my own career. [It was] very, very hard to get my first film done after graduating from film school. It took me six or seven years, whereas my male peers were much faster than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Other major European festivals appear to be doing slightly better: at Cannes this year, five out of 22 films in the main competition were directed by women, and at the Berlinale seven out of 17 films were by female film-makers.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-9\" class=\"dcr-76akua\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a>Free newsletter | Every week<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-vf9hps\">Sign up to Film Weekly<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1r7my33\">Take a front seat at the cinema with our weekly email filled with all the latest news and all the movie action that matters<\/p>\n<p id=\"EmailSignup-skip-link-9\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-label=\"after newsletter promotion\" role=\"note\" class=\"dcr-76akua\">after newsletter promotion<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Woman Unknown is the third feature by the Denmark-born director, whose 2019 film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2020\/nov\/03\/queen-of-hearts-review-may-el-toukhy-trine-dyrholm\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queen of Hearts<\/a> won the Nordic Council film prize, the most prestigious pan-Nordic film award. El-Toukhy is also the initiator of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2025\/may\/19\/dogme-25-announced-at-cannes-directors-manifesto\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dogma 25<\/a>, a relaunch and update of the return-to-basics movement that brought forth directors such as Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Set in the immediate aftermath of Danish liberation from Nazi occupation, Woman Unknown tells the story of a young housemaid, Marie (Mathilde Arcel), who is about to marry her widowed employer but anxious about him discovering a shameful secret in her past: during the war, Marie had an intimate relationship with a German soldier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">El-Toukhy said the film grew out of research into the witch-hunt against female \u201chorizontal collaborators\u201d, and the realisation that \u201cthe female body during wartime is considered national territory\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cMy film is about the invisibility of women,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about being objectified on one hand, and on the other hand being unseen and voiceless.\u201d She conceded that the backlash against the lack of female directors on the Lido meant she was now probably \u201cthe most-known woman unknown at this festival\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The enduring cult of male genius is keeping down female film-makers, one of the only two female directors&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":607894,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[146,85,46],"class_list":["post-607893","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-entertainment","tag-entertainment","tag-il","tag-israel"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/607893","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=607893"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/607893\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/607894"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=607893"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=607893"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=607893"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
