In a few months, Marvel\u2019s 2021 flick\u00a0Eternals<\/a>\u00a0will celebrate its fifth anniversary. One of its big selling points back then was director Chlo\u00e9 Zhao, fresh off her Oscar win for Nomadland\u00a0and who talked up her desire to make a big movie with real sets<\/a> and a more thoughtful vibe.<\/p>\n

Critics and audiences didn\u2019t really gel with it back then, but hasn\u2019t killed Zhao\u2019s affection for the medium. At the Venice Film Festival, she called making the film \u201ca dream come true,\u201d and likened western comics like the Big Two and others to manga. As someone who grew up wanting to be a mangaka, but couldn\u2019t draw, Zhao has always wanted to tell stories, and she thinks all forms of it, even ones to popularly dunk on, have value.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe purpose of storytelling for me, is to create containers for people \u2026 to try to process what they need to process,\u201d she explained. \u201cArchetypes are such a great way to do it\u2014and we see them in myths\u2014because it\u2019s something we all share. I do feel it\u2019s important not to write off stories because we don\u2019t consider them high art.\u201d And to those that\u2019ve used Eternals\u00a0to contrast against\u00a0Nomadland,\u00a0that\u2019s something she\u2019s not here for, as she jokingly said both films are about \u201cpeople in nature who have complicated relationships with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

To Zhao\u2019s credit,\u00a0Eternals\u00a0did try to be something like high art for superhero movies and while it didn\u2019t fully take<\/a>, it\u2019s still got its fans. Remembered more as a flawed one-off, maybe there\u2019ll be a day someone tries to do what it does and take an ambitious swing\u2014after all, you can get great things by building on less successful attempts.<\/p>\n
