The Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon<\/a> has said she is still losing work because of her outspoken support for Palestinians, despite what she \u2060described as a broader shift \u2060in public opinion against \u200bUS support for Israel.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the Venice film festival<\/a>, where she is promoting her latest movie The Echo Chamber, Sarandon said some parts of the film industry continued to \u2060shun her over her activism.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that the narrative has completely changed in terms of the historical relevance of Palestine<\/a> and the ties of Zionists with America and our politics,\u201d \u2060she said. \u201cThat has been a major revelation for people, how much money the United States gives to Israel, nobody really \u200bunderstood that.\u201c<\/p>\n

US opinion polls have shown support \u200cfor Israel softening<\/a> and sympathy for \u200cPalestinians rising since the start of the Gaza war in 2023.<\/p>\n

But the 79-year-old actor said her support for the Palestinian \u200ccause continued to carry professional consequences.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve still had movies taken away recently because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still,\u201d she told reporters. \u201cBut that\u2019s the power structure. I think [among] people, certainly internationally, I feel welcome.\u201c<\/p>\n

An Academy Award winner for Dead Man Walking, Sarandon rose to prominence in films including The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Bull Durham and Thelma and Louise.<\/p>\n

She was dropped by her longstanding talent agency UTA in 2023<\/a> after \u200cremarks she made while attending pro-Palestinian rallies one month after the Hamas attack on Israel, including: \u201cThere are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conflict has spilled into this year\u2019s Venice film festival, with activists \u200bcalling on organisers to raise the Palestinian flag in recognition of Palestinian directors screening at the event.<\/p>\n

The festival\u2019s artistic director, Alberto Barbera, has said this is impossible because Italy does not formally recognise the state of Palestine, but he has pointed to several films being shown on the Lido that show the struggle of ordinary Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Sarandon said resistance to hiring outspoken critics of Israel<\/a> \u2060remained particularly strong among major studios.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it is a major studio, I think \u200bit\u2019s not just with me but with \u200bother people who have been told \u200bthat that is impossible,\u201d she said, thanking Andrea Pallaoro, the director of The Echo Chamber, for casting \u200bher.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found my family, \u200cI found my people \u200band I\u2019m OK,\u201d she \u200bsaid, sparking prolonged applause at the news conference.<\/p>\n

In her latest film, adapted from the final screenplay by Italian film-maker Bernardo Bertolucci, Sarandon plays an ageing singer who hires a music producer recovering from drug addiction to work on a comeback album.<\/p>\n
