LONDON, Sept 8 (Reuters) – British retail sales growth slowed to a four-month low in August as a surge driven by \u200crecord-hot weather earlier in the summer faded, figures from the British \u200cRetail Consortium trade body showed on Tuesday. <\/p>\n
The BRC said that total retail sales grew \u200bby an annual 0.7% in August, down from 1.3% in July, while like-for-like growth \u2014 which adjusts for changing floorspace \u2013 slowed to 0.5% from 1%. <\/p>\n
“Summer spending started in May this year, as earlier higher temperatures pulled forward related \u200cpurchases. And while the \u2060heat and holiday spending continued to drive food, drink, health and beauty sales into August, most other categories \u2060couldn’t sustain another month of growth,” said Linda Ellett, head of consumer, retail and leisure at survey sponsors KPMG. <\/p>\n
\u2022 Food sales grew by an annual \u200b2.6% in \u200bAugust, down from 3.8% in July \u200band below the average growth \u200cover the past year <\/p>\n
\u2022 Non-food sales fell by 0.8% in August after a 0.7% drop in July, weaker than the average 0.2% growth in the past year <\/p>\n
\u2022 The BRC said shoppers cut back on big-ticket purchases such as furniture and household appliances in favour of cheaper health \u200cand beauty products <\/p>\n
\u2022 BRC data is not \u200badjusted for inflation and is based on \u200bsales recorded by major \u200bretailers between August 2 and August 29 <\/p>\n
\u2022 Official retail \u200csales data showed a slowdown in \u200bvolumes growth to 1.6% \u200bin July from 3.8% in June <\/p>\n
\u2022 Separate data from Barclays, also released on Tuesday, showed overall consumer spending grew 2.1% in \u200bAugust after a 2.0% \u200crise in July <\/p>\n
\u2022 Barclays also reported a fall in consumer \u200bconfidence to 26% from July’s 21-month high of 30% <\/p>\n
