US President Donald Trump<\/a> said Wednesday that he expects the war with Iran to end \u201cimmediately after\u201d the US midterm elections, arguing that Tehran is attempting to influence the vote in hopes of facing a weaker Congress.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters before departing for Dallas, Trump was asked about the continued conflict with Iran<\/a> and the sharp rise in oil prices.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the war will end immediately after the election,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI think the war will end immediately after the election because they can\u2019t hold out any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump then accused Iran<\/a> of attempting to influence the November vote: \u201cThey\u2019re desperate to try and affect the election so that we can get a nice weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon,\u201d he said. \u201cAll they want is a nuclear weapon, and if they had a nuclear weapon, the whole world is in deep trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s remarks came as oil prices climbed above $100 a barrel amid renewed US-Iran military action. He acknowledged that Americans are paying higher prices but again framed the conflict around preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAll you have to do is say, \u2018Will you let Iran have a nuclear weapon?\u2019 And the answer is no,\u201d Trump said. He claimed Iran\u2019s economy was in severe distress, citing high inflation, a weakened currency and difficulties paying its military.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe control the strait and lots of other things,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Trump predicts reduction in oil, gas prices<\/p>\n

Trump predicted that energy prices would begin falling after the midterms. \u201cRight after the election, oil prices are going to be tumbling downward,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re going to be tumbling down, and we\u2019ll get them down. I think for gasoline, we\u2019ll get them below $2 a gallon.\u201d<\/p>\n

He cautioned, however, that the decline would not come before the vote. \u201cBut not until after the midterms,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI think it\u2019s going to take a little bit longer than the midterm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about the latest US attacks on Iranian assets, Trump said Washington was responsible for the strikes and signaled that more could follow. \u201cThe attacks are made by us,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe\u2019ve knocked out nine of their ships. I would say that the attacks are caused by us. Yeah, and you\u2019re going to see a lot more.\u201d<\/p>\n

He later said the United States had \u201ctaken out about nine of their tankers.\u201d Trump was also asked whether a nuclear agreement with Tehran remained possible after Energy Secretary Chris Wright reportedly suggested such a deal might no longer be on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m doing much more than a nuclear deal,\u201d Trump replied. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot more than nuclear. We\u2019re going to have nuclear. That\u2019s 99.9, but there\u2019s going to be a lot of other things on the table that wouldn\u2019t have been on the table three months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump responds to UK’s West Bank sanctions<\/p>\n

Trump also addressed for the first time the sanctions announced by Britain, France and Canada targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The measures have prompted a sharp response from Israel, including a demand that Britain close its East Jerusalem consulate within 30 days.<\/p>\n

Asked for his reaction and whether he opposed the measures, Trump said he had only just learned of them. \u201cWell, I\u2019ve just seen it, and I\u2019ll be speaking to Israel,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI\u2019ll be speaking to them, and I\u2019ll find out what their thinking is. I understand, you know, I understand exactly what\u2019s going on, but I want to find out why all of a sudden that has happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments were more cautious than those of US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who has publicly condemned the sanctions.
