An early version of Apple\u2019<\/a>s digital assistant Siri AI<\/a> does not have access to some common apps, including Gmail<\/a> and WhatApp<\/a>, The New York Times reported<\/a> Tuesday (Sept. 8).<\/p>\n

Without access, Siri AI cannot perform tasks such as finding messages within those apps, according to the report, which was based on an early version available to app developers.<\/p>\n

This shortcoming highlights the fact that the success of Siri AI depends in part on third-party developers, some of which have products that will compete with Apple\u2019s digital assistant, the report said.<\/p>\n

Apple did not immediately reply to PYMNTS\u2019 request for comment.<\/p>\n

It was reported Wednesday (Sept. 9) that Siri AI now works as a standalone app that handles richer answers, natural multistep conversations and actions across more than 300,000 apps<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During Apple\u2019s annual fall \u201cSurprise and Shine\u201d event, which was held Wednesday, new CEO John Ternus said the company\u2019s iPhone is the best personal device for AI because of its privacy protections and its deep knowledge of its own users.<\/p>\n

Throughout the event, Apple executives argued that because Apple controls the hardware, the operating system and the data on a person\u2019s phone, it is the best-positioned company to deliver AI.<\/p>\n

PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster wrote Tuesday that Siri now runs on Google\u2019s Gemini, meaning Apple licensed Gemini models<\/a> to run underneath Siri and Apple Intelligence, with Apple\u2019s name on the front.<\/p>\n

\u201ciOS 27 lets users choose which third-party model powers Apple Intelligence features, with Apple refusing responsibility for what those models produce,\u201d Webster wrote. \u201cThe outcome is the same either way. Siri is renting someone else\u2019s brain and hoping iPhone users love it as much as Android users love the Gemini chatbot.\u201d<\/p>\n

When announcing Wednesday that Siri AI will roll out in beta with iOS 27, Apple said the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will deliver powerful AI capabilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n
