Every dollar is a bet on American capitalism\u2014that the advances those facilities help produce will earn enough to fund the next breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p>The advent of Chinese <a href=\"https:\/\/hai.stanford.edu\/ai-definitions\/what-is-an-open-weight-model\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">open-weight models<\/a> is undermining that bet, not just by ordinary competition, but by theft. (Open-weight means its code is freely downloadable and customizable, unlike its proprietary U.S. rivals.) Chinese AI models like DeepSeek, Moonshot\u2019s Kimi K3, and Alibaba Cloud\u2019s Qwen barely registered in American C-suites before last year. They now run inside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/anishasircar\/2026\/05\/21\/airbnb-ceo-brian-chesky-called-chinese-ai-fast-and-cheap-now-congress-wants-answers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Airbnb<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mlq.ai\/news\/coinbase-switches-to-chinese-ai-models-glm-and-kimi-cuts-ai-spending-by-50\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coinbase<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/31\/us-lawmakers-doordash-chinese-ai-models.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DoorDash<\/a>, and many others.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s prowess is attributable in part to real ingenuity. It also owes much to a technique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/what-is-ai-model-distillation-why-is-it-becoming-us-china-flashpoint-2026-07-31\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called distillation<\/a>, in which a state-of-the-art American model is asked millions of questions, its answers are recorded, and a new model is trained on them\u2014inheriting much of the original\u2019s capability without needing anything like the research and investment that produced it. Done with permission, it\u2019s an acceptable research practice. Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/26\/03\/25\/apple-is-distilling-google-gemini-into-smaller-chunks-for-on-iphone-ai-processing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pays Google<\/a> to distill the latter\u2019s Gemini model and make a smarter Siri.
