\n\tInternet sleuths were convinced this week that Tom Cruise<\/a>\u2019s upcoming movie \u201cDigger<\/a>\u201d is a secret musical, but unfortunately that isn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n

\n\tVariety spoke with two sources familiar with the production, who said \u201cDigger\u201d is not a movie musical, but both were amused by the sleuthing.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe rumor started online after the film\u2019s final trailer was released, and in certain shots it looked like Cruise \u2014\u00a0wearing nearly unrecognizable makeup and prosthetics for the role \u2014\u00a0was on a rotating platform often used in stage productions. In other shots, background actors appeared to have their mouths open while singing. The theory quickly spread on social media.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy favorite conspiracy theory right now is that Digger is secretly a musical and they\u2019re desperately trying to hide it in the marketing,\u201d author Jason Pargin wrote on X<\/a> on Sept. 10.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDigger\u201d has not been widely screened for press yet, and is set to be released on Oct. 2.<\/p>\n

\n\tCruise said he first latched on to the project when director Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu read him the script aloud over several days.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve always done that,\u201d Cruise said in an interview<\/a> with Empire. \u201cI want the writer to read me his idea, because then I can see where we\u2019re going. We\u2019re exploring rhythms, and I\u2019m feeling the world. I\u2019m literally an audience. I want to hear his voice. I want to understand, and see the world the way he sees it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBesides Cruise, the starry cast of \u201cDigger\u201d includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra H\u00fcller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu wrote the script alongside Alexander Dinelaris, Nicol\u00e1s Giacobone and Sabina Berman, from a story by Jez Butterworth, Berman and I\u00f1\u00e1rritu.<\/p>\n
