The ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon will meet next week at the US State Department in Washington, rather than in Rome as originally planned, a State Department official said on Friday.

The meeting will address “ongoing developments and the continued implementation of the trilateral framework, which remains the only practical mechanism for restoring Lebanon’s sovereignty and ensuring Israel’s security,” the official said.

The official added that the next round of formal talks between the sides is expected to take place in Rome in October.

The first round of talks began in Rome on August 4, and a source described the negotiations to The Jerusalem Post as “positive.”

Both Israeli and Lebanese military personnel attended the talks, the source added.

US State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott discussed the peace talks in an X/Twitter post at the time, saying the discussions “bring together technical teams from both governments to advance full implementation of the Trilateral Framework, including the pilot zone process, verified disarmament of Hezbollah and other Iran-backed security threats, redeployment of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and laying the ground for a comprehensive peace and security agreement.”

“The United States remains fully committed to supporting both governments as they carry this process forward in a manner that delivers lasting security for both countries, eliminates security threats to Israel, and restores Lebanese state authority throughout the south,” said Pigott.
