Happy weekend!

            3

                            Broadchurch

One death, one town, everyone’s a suspect

I didn’t come to the incredible British crime series Broadchurch until years after its 2013 original release, but it didn’t matter in the least—Its colder and slower, one-death, one-season format was a total departure from the American body-of-the-day police procedurals I was used to, and I was hooked. Arriving the same year as The Fall and Top of the Lake, Broadchurch’s small-town focus and stunning Dorset cliffside backdrop also helped make it feel fresh and foreign.

The series opens with 11-year-old Danny Latimer found dead on the beach below the cliffs. Local Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller (the brilliant Olivia Colman) is paired up with brooding outsider, Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (Doctor Who himself, David Tennant), to take on the case. Alec has got some baggage, as you’d expect, and Ellie’s sore because he scooped up the DI job that was promised to her. But there’s no time for that in a town where pretty much everyone’s a suspect and secrets are being kept. All 24 episodes are nail-biting, British crime drama at its finest that you can binge to your heart’s content.

            2

                            Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

The movie’s star-studded cast returns for a different telling of the story

As a proud Torontonian, graphic novelist Bryan Lee O’Malley and director Edgar Wright’s stunning 2010 movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a film I’ve watched over and over again, mostly so I can impress my daughter by pointing out that my band once played at Lee’s Palace, too. It never impressed her, but she’s also developed a love for the film, so much so that we were both excited when Netflix brought its entire original cast back together to voice their characters in the animated Scott Pilgrim Takes Off series.

Yes, Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, and the rest return in this eight-episode adult animated show that starts out following the same path as the film—Sex Bob-omb bassist Scott Pilgrim (Cera) falls for Ramona Flowers (Winstead), and must fight her seven evil exes to win her love. But the story diverges when Scott doesn’t make it past the first ex, seemingly dies, putting Ramona at the center of the story as she solves the mystery. The single-season show has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

            1

                            Black Rabbit

Two brothers, a restaurant, and loyalties tested

If you clear your schedule this weekend and basically ignore your family and friends, you could probably binge all eight episodes of Black Rabbit in time for Monday’s Primetime Emmys ceremony. We’ll see if the brilliant Jason Bateman, star and director of the wild Netflix crime thriller, will take home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role. Six of the show’s seven total nominations were already handed out, and sadly, Bateman did not win the directing award, so fingers crossed.

Jude Law plays Jake Friedken, the charismatic and ambitious owner of the Black Rabbit, a restaurant and VIP lounge he’s working hard to make one of the hottest spots in New York. Jake isn’t without his secrets, but his older brother Vince (Bateman) is a piece of work who’s been AWOL for years, trailed by loan sharks, and whose gambling addiction gets him into some serious trouble in Reno, prompting a return to New York. Once a straight-up go-getter, Vince works his way back to the Rabbit, which he actually co-founded, and Jake reluctantly gives him another chance. Bad idea.

Vince’s chaos reopens old family wounds and brings the criminal underworld he’s caught up in right to the Rabbit’s doorstep, threatening everything Jake is working toward. Black Rabbit is a brilliant dark story of family loyalty and the limits it can be pushed to before something snaps.

Your couch has a full weekend ahead

If you’re not totally dedicating your weekend to taking in all the major Primetime Emmy contenders, then hopefully these three suggestions for a weekend binge will give you some ideas.
