So when the bell rang for the final lap of the men’s Ultimate 1500m final, with the Scot in third and closing on the leader, Yared Nuguse, the next 53 seconds felt preordained.

So it proved. First Kerr sauntered past Robert Farken into second. Then with 250m remaining, he scootered past Nuguse. The 20‑year‑old Australian star Cam Myers chased valiantly but Kerr smoothly nursed a three-metre lead to the finish.

As Kerr crossed the line in 3min 29.35sec, with Myers 0.33 back, he cupped his hand to his ear. The sound he was hearing? The adoration of the crowd, and the kerching of the $150,000 (£111,000) first prize. “To be honest, I didn’t feel amazing in the warmup,” Kerr said. “But these are the things you have to overcome.”

Asked about Myers, who won the Diamond League final last week, Kerr replied: “He’s an awesome athlete but I was able to peek over the screen. I pressed again at 120m, and then the gap didn’t change, and I knew that at that point I had it.”

The only shame was that Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who won a brilliant 5,000m victory on Friday, decided to skip what would have been a mouthwatering clash. But Kerr was generous to his great rival afterwards, describing Ingebrigtsen’s victory as “very impressive” and praising his decision to rest up to protect the longevity of his career.

Kerr will now take a holiday having ended his season having shattered the world mile record and walked away with three major prizes: world indoor championship gold over 3,000m, Commonwealth Games gold over the mile, and now the Ultimate Championship trophy. But the 28-year-old continues to have big plans for the future – including an attempt on the world 1500m record next year. “I want to roll this into 2027 and 2028,” he said.

“These are the peak years, and we’re really starting to get some offensive going. But I’m a human being, and I understand the highs of the sport are sometimes followed by a lot of real lows. I had that in 2025. I’m not taking it for granted.”

Charlotte Henrich (centre) gained three places to earn Britain silver and $10,000 each for herself and her teammates. Photograph: Martin Rickett/PA

Elsewhere the American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden had plenty of jaws crashing to the floor in the 200m. Against the Olympic champion Gabby Thomas, Jefferson-Wooden ran 21:47 – the fourth fastest time in history. It was 0.13sec off Florence Griffith Joyner’s world record, despite a -0.6m/s headwind.

Thomas was second in an impressive 21.77, while Britain’s Amy Hunt was fourth in a season’s best 22.10 in what was her 47th race of the year.

“My coach has given us eight weeks off,” Hunt said. “I’m not an early-morning person and so I’m looking forward to being on the beach, spending time with my family, and try to pack it with fun stuff – art galleries, museums, and the cinema.”

skip past newsletter promotion

Sign up to Sport in Focus

Our picture editors select their favourite sporting images from the past week, from the spectacular to the powerful, and with a little bit of fun thrown in

after newsletter promotion

Earlier, the new 400m hurdles world record-holder, Alison Dos Santos, again proved he was top dog in his event by running the third fastest time in history, 45.98, against the world champion, Rai Benjamin, and the former world champion Karsten Warholm. “What we are doing is so important and so impressive that people sometimes take it for granted,” Benjamin said, which seemed an entirely fair comment given the trio now hold the 38 best times in history.

In the men’s javelin, Rumesh Pathirage capped a brilliant breakthrough season by throwing 91.09m to take first prize – and said later that cricket had helped him to become the best in the world. “I inputted almost all my technique from cricket into the javelin throw because there are some similarities,” he said.

In the men’s 800m, Marco Arop’s brave frontrunning tactics came just short of sealing victory as he was overtaken by the Algerian Djamel Sedjati, who won in 1:41.91.

There were two other spectacular performances on the night. In the high jump, the Italian Gianmarco Tamberi jumped a world-leading 2.37m to take first, while in the men’s 200m Kenny Bednarek ran a world lead 19.52 sec to comfortably beat the Olympic champion, Letsile Tebogo, who ran 19.76 in second.

Throughout Josh Kerr’s perfect season, he has made the sublime look routine.
