So is our pain over every innocent life lost. But we must unite in repudiating the lie of genocide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA crucial difference between war as tragedy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/news\/uk\/the-gaza-genocide-claim-is-a-blood-libel-says-simon-schama-jas0eo7p\" data-tracking-context=\"In article link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">war as genocide<\/a> is intent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this war, only one side intended to commit genocide, and that is Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe classic definition of genocide has been changed to apply only to the Gaza war \u2013 just as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/opinion\/how-ngos-have-driven-the-uks-dangerous-double-standard-on-israel-l6dxzkzb\" data-tracking-context=\"In article link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anti-Israel NGOs<\/a> changed the definition of apartheid and colonialism to apply only to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accusation of genocide has become a pretext for excluding, attacking and even murdering Jews around the world. Its purpose is to delegitimise Jewish self-determination and to turn the only Jewish state into the world\u2019s arch criminal and pariah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ari Ingel, executive director of Creative Community for Peace, said artists and cultural figures had a particular responsibility because of their ability to influence public opinion.<\/p>\n<p>The open letter argued\u00a0that rejecting the genocide allegation does not require ignoring suffering in Gaza or abandoning criticism of Israel\u2019s conduct.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, its signatories insisted that the distinction between legitimate criticism of Israel and antisemitism matters precisely because artists and cultural figures have the power to shape public understanding.<\/p>\n<p>The letter ultimately calls on those with that influence to use it carefully: to acknowledge Palestinian suffering, oppose antisemitism, and resist presenting contested legal claims as settled fact.<\/p>\n<p>Prominent non-Jewish signatories included former Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/news\/uk\/activist-palestine-paint-stunt-boris-johnson-wedding-ozbsbcpg\" data-tracking-context=\"In article link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boris Johnson<\/a>, ex-cabinet minister\u00a0Nadhim Zahawi and singer Boy George.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the letter, Lipstadt said: \u201cThose who accuse Israel of genocide, a very specific crime with a legally specific definition, are fulfilling the dictum attributed to the Nazi propagandist, Josef Goebbels: \u2018If you tell a lie and keep repeating it enough, people will eventually come to believe it\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy October 10 [2023], accusations of genocide were common, even before Israel set foot in Gaza. Then it was extremist voices who made this charge.
