This has become an industry standard, except for a few smartphones tailored for users who prefer a smaller footprint.

The most common issue users face is reaching the keyboard or an app icon when using the phone one-handed. Even though I have large hands, I face the same issue and get annoyed when I have to stretch out my thumb.

Replying to urgent texts gets difficult, and I often have to stop what I’m doing to use the phone with both hands.

But after trying to find a solution via Gemini, it suggested I turn on my phone’s one-handed gesture, which could help me use the phone with one hand.

What surprised me was that this setting has been available since Android 12 but hasn’t gotten much attention.

But after turning on the gesture, I could finally text one-handed on my OnePlus 9 Pro while walking and holding a grocery bag.

It may not seem like much, but one-handed texting no longer feels stressful and could be a massive boon for all types of users.

This accessibility feature can benefit folks with smaller hands, temporary injuries, or when your other hand is busy.

            How the one-hand gesture works

The one-hand gesture is simple to use. When turned on, I only need to do a short downward swipe near the bottom edge of the screen.

This activates the gesture, and the top half of the display slides down for better access. With the top half of the display slid down, the keys on the keyboard app come closer to where my thumb would naturally sit.

Samsung Galaxy users can use the same downward swipe gesture or double-tap the home button if buttons are turned on.

When I used it for the first time, it didn’t activate properly for me. That’s because I replicated the tutorial gesture animation that played when turning on the feature.

However, in reality, for the one-handed gesture to work, I had to swipe down about half an inch from the bottom edge of the screen.

What astonishes me is that many phones don’t enable the one-handed gesture by default, and turning it on differs from one OEM to another.

How to turn on the one-handed gesture on Android phones

            It depends on your device

I’ve already mentioned that the one-handed gesture is buried in the settings, but it isn’t too convoluted to turn on.

However, turning on the setting on a Google Pixel or a Samsung Galaxy device is slightly different.

Here’s how to turn on the one-handed gesture on your Android device:

Pixel devices: Tap Settings > System > Gestures > One-handed mode. Select Pull screen into reach.

Samsung Galaxy Devices: Go to Settings > Advanced Feature, toggle on One-handed mode, and select Gesture or Button.

Other Devices: Find One-handed mode in Additional Settings, or use the Search Settings field if the menu path differs.

After one-handed mode is enabled, you only need to swipe downwards near the bottom edge of the screen.

When you’re done using the gesture, tap an empty space to return to normal mode. One-handed mode was a huge help, but I found that using it alongside Gboard’s one-handed mode was the ultimate combination.

When Gboard’s one-handed mode is turned on, the keyboard becomes even tighter and moves left or right depending on which hand is holding the phone.

To turn on Gboard’s one-handed mode, tap the four-square menu and select One-handed mode.

You can also use the space bar of the keyboard as a trackpad to move the cursor in one-handed mode. Slide your finger to move the cursor or swipe left on the space bar to delete whole words.

With this combo, I could reply to texts on various apps faster than I could with the phone the traditional way.

I have to warn you: it takes time to get used to the gesture, but after you get the hang of it, you’ll use it more often than you expected.

However, if you own a phone from the Pixel 11 series, you can sidestep everything I’ve mentioned so far and use the new Ramble feature. I hear it’s quite awesome.

                    Related

The Gboard gesture that’s nearly doubled my typing speed

I recommend it to everyone

One-handed gesture is the way to go

Using phones with large displays can be both enjoyable and annoying. It’s great for consuming content but feels unnatural to operate with one hand.

If someone like me with large hands can find it difficult to use a phone with a 6.5-inch screen, I can only imagine what others might go through.

But after I started using the one-handed gesture on my phone, it made using the phone and texting on the go easier.

Use the gesture for a few days and see if you can adapt to it.
