Though Sheeran wrote that he was “appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine” and “the suffering and pain caused on both sides”, he said that attempts to broker conversations among parties had been unsuccessful and the “venue’s and the promoter’s decision was final”.

“Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine,” he wrote in a multipage post on Instagram. “I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living.”

“I have spent this week trying to build bridges, to find a solution and unfortunately, was unable to do so,” he concluded. “I know who I am, both as a person and as an artist, and those who know my heart know my values too.”

The tour withdrawals join a growing chorus of backlash against Macklemore’s removal, including numerous politicians and Ms Rachel, the children’s educator and YouTube star, who wrote on Instagram: “Ed Sheeran had an opportunity [to] show that we won’t be bullied into punishing people for supporting Palestine.
