A second season of HBO Max’s Harry Potter TV series is in the works, and the cast continues to grow.

The streamer has plans for an accelerated production of the series adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s book s, with Season 1 on the way and production looking to start soon for Season 2.

Read on for everything we know about Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter show:

When will Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter TV show come out?

No release date has yet been set for the second season of the series, but production is aiming to start this fall ahead of Season 1’s premiere.

Who will be new in the cast for Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter TV Show?

Bonnie Hill will take over the role of Ginny Weasley, Ron’s younger sister and the youngest Weasley sibling, in Season 2 from Gracie Cochrane, who will portray her in Season 1. Cochrane stepped away from the series due to unforeseen circumstances, prompting the recasting of Harry’s eventual love interest as well as a key character in Rowling’s second book, The Chamber of Secrets.

Lenny Rush (Am I Being Unreasonable?) will portray Dobby, the loyal house-elf who serves the Malfoy family. Billy Barratt (Invasion), who holds the record as the youngest International Emmy winner, will portray Tom Riddle, the younger version of Lord Voldemort.

Deadline first broke the news of Nicholas Hoult’s casting as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, who serves as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Rowling’s book The Chamber of Secrets. We then first reported Kit Harrington stepping up to fill the role after Hoult departed due to scheduling issues. Harrington voices the character in the audiobooks.

The newest round of additions thus far include Molly Hewitt-Richards, who will portray Moaning Myrtle, Rafe Spall as patriarch Arthur Weasley and Jasper Ambrose as Colin Creevey. Rafe Spall is the son of Timothy Spall, who portrayed Peter Pettigrew aka Wormtail from the third Harry Potter film onwards. Deadline first reported that the casting search for Creevey was underway, whose camera comes in handy in Season 2, in June.

Who else is behind Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter TV show?

Jon Brown (Succession), who was a writer on the first season, has been elevated to co-showrunner for Season 2 alongside Season 1 showrunner Francesca Gardiner. The elevation lines up with the faster production schedule.

“As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish Season 1 by Christmas and to return to production for Season 2 this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum,” Gardiner said. “I’ve loved working with Jon from the very first day we met on Succession through to these recent times together on Harry Potter. Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he’s also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him.”

Gardiner also executive produces. Mark Mylod serves as executive producer and directed multiple episodes. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films also executive produce the series, produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. It will air on HBO and be available to stream exclusively on HBO Max.

When does Season 1 of HBO’s Harry Potter series come out?

Season 1 of the series premieres Christmas day 2026.

Will there be more seasons of the Harry Potter show on HBO?

The idea is one season per book, but the show has not yet been renewed for a third season. Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content Casey Bloys gave brief updates on the series post-Emmys 2026.

“Each book is a huge event. I’m right now thinking about season by season as far as what it all adds up to. But I can tell you, Christmas Day is going to be a great launch day for Harry Potter,” he said.

He also reinforced the idea of a tight production schedule.

“We’re trying as hard to bring it back as quickly as possible. It’s not going to be two years [between seasons], but we’re trying hard to keep it as compressed as possible,” he said.
