The British foreign secretary Ed Miliband said that the Israeli government was losing friends and allies because of its actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, which he said had mobilised people around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Israeli government is losing friends. It\u2019s not gaining allies; it\u2019s lost allies. It\u2019s losing allies all over,\u201d Ed Miliband said on Tuesday in an interview with UK-based podcast The Rest is Politics. <\/p>\n

Miliband said the UK\u2019s recent sanctions targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank followed warnings that the two-state solution was being \u201cdestroyed by the facts on the ground\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said the measures were intended to target the \u201cillegal occupation\u201d, rather than Israel as a state.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe status quo is not working,\u201d Miliband said, pointing to Israel\u2019s E1 settlement expansion project, which he said had long been viewed as a red line because it could separate East Jerusalem from the West Bank and make a Palestinian state unviable.<\/p>\n

He also cited the International Court of Justice\u2019s 2024 ruling on Israel\u2019s occupation, the length of the occupation and the displacement of Palestinians as factors behind the UK government\u2019s decision to act.<\/p>\n

Miliband said the UK could not \u201cgive up\u201d in the face of what he described as \u201csettler terrorism\u201d, adding that he believed there could be no stable Middle East without a two-state solution.<\/p>\n
