U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank during his address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday and warned that ongoing settlement expansion threatens the viability of a two-state solution.<\/p>\n

Burnham, who noted he comprehensively reset Britain’s position “just eight weeks into becoming prime minister,” said that while Britain strongly condemns the October 7 Hamas attacks<\/a> and stands with Israel and Jewish people around the world against threats from Iran, “this does not justify the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza or the West Bank.”<\/p>\n

“Far too many people have died, including so many children. Far too little aid is getting in, and it has gone on for far too long. We will not stand by as the horrific suffering continues to grow,” Burnham said.<\/p>\n

Burnham pointed to Israel’s recent tenders for the construction of the E1 “mega settlement,” warning it would sever Palestinian territorial continuity and “threaten to put a viable Palestinian state beyond reach<\/a>.” He declared that “it cannot be allowed to happen,” noting that Britain has acted “by banning trade and goods with illegal settlements, recognizing that the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territory is unlawful and sanctioning those taking part in the construction of illegal settlements.”<\/p>\n

The U.K.’s decision is part of a broader diplomatic shift, following an announcement earlier this month by 11 countries\u2014including Canada, France, Ireland, and Nordic nations\u2014that they plan to ban settlement imports in response to unprecedented settler violence and expansion. <\/p>\n

In retaliation, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced sweeping diplomatic countermeasures against London, including closing the British Consulate in East Jerusalem, expelling British personnel overseeing the Gaza cease-fire, and banning 12 British officials and public figures from entering Israel.<\/p>\n

“We want to see the suffering and death finally come to an end. We want to see Israeli and Palestinian people living side by side <\/a>in peace and security,” Burnham said, stressing that “the best hope for peace and stability for both nations comes under attack.”<\/p>\n

Warning against political lip service, he added: “We live in an age of low trust in politics. If we were to continue to talk about the two-state solution, but fail to back those words with deeds, that trust will fall even lower, and our enemies will seek to exploit the alienation that follows from that.
