A Goldman Sachs gauge of Asian shipping has climbed roughly 17% since the start of the quarter, while a semiconductor index has tumbled 18% over the same stretch, opening a 35-percentage-point gap between two sectors that rarely trade in opposite directions.

The divergence offers investors a fresh alternative to the region’s crowded artificial intelligence trade, which had dominated portfolios for much of the past two years. The immediate catalyst is a sustained climb in spot freight rates. The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index has risen for eight consecutive weeks and now sits at its highest level since July 2024.

Multiple supply-side disruptions are squeezing effective vessel capacity. Ships continue to face navigation constraints in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz tied to the Iran conflict, while some traders have accelerated shipments ahead of new US tariffs. Typhoons across Asia have also caused severe congestion at key hub ports, further reducing the number of available vessels.

That mismatch between demand and available capacity has rapidly lifted earnings expectations for container liners. Joakim Hannisdahl, chief executive officer at Gersemi Asset Management, said shipping demand has been “quite good” this year and profitability has far exceeded earlier projections. With the industry entering its traditional peak season, he added, “You are in a strong seasonal period for a year.”

Bloomberg Intelligence analysts pointed to port congestion and longer routing as factors that have slowed vessel turnaround times. The rise in freight rates, they argued, is being driven primarily by a material reduction in available supply rather than a simple demand upswing. Those effects could intensify further as shippers rush to move cargo before China’s Oct. 1-7 Golden Week holiday.

Among individual stocks, TS Lines, SITC International Holdings and Mitsui OSK Lines have led the advance. Jefferies has raised earnings forecasts and price targets for Japanese carriers Nippon Yusen, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and Mitsui OSK Lines, citing Red Sea rerouting that has become semi-permanent and transportation demand that has proven more resilient than anticipated. The containership market, the firm said, “remain firmer than expected.”

Simon Sidmalm, a portfolio manager at Tundra Fonder, noted that container freight prices and shipping equities have recently shown a strong positive correlation. “Geopolitical tension around key straits leads to longer shipping routes, combined with higher fuel prices,” he said, adding that the pricing power now visible among carriers differs meaningfully from an ordinary cyclical recovery.

The strength in spot markets is also filtering into the shipbuilding cycle. JPMorgan, citing broker information, said South Korean shipping giant HMM has selected Yangzijiang Shipbuilding to construct eight Newcastlemax bulk carriers in a contract worth approximately $900 million. Delivery timelines extend to 2030.

JPMorgan estimated that the large bulk carriers could generate gross margins of 25% to 30%, translating to roughly $225 million to $270 million in gross profit over the construction period. The order also locks in several years of revenue visibility for the shipyard.

Despite the sector’s momentum, its valuation advantage over semiconductors remains tightly linked to supply bottlenecks and elevated freight rates. The principal risk to that thesis is a diplomatic breakthrough with Iran. US President Donald Trump said his officials had “very good” talks with Iranian envoys in New York, though shipping markets have yet to show any meaningful loosening in response.

Any agreement that restores normal transit through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea could rapidly unwind the shortage premium and war-risk insurance costs that currently support carrier earnings. Until effective vessel supply is substantially restored, however, elevated freight rates are expected to keep the earnings backdrop favorable for Asian shipping companies.

A dramatic rotation is reshaping Asia’s equity markets this quarter, with shipping companies surging ahead while semiconductor stocks…

[5
114,282820,3468,282825,85,46,101779,9734,282823,282821,282822,282819,282824,282826
post-625612","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-business","tag-gersemi-asset-management","tag-goldman-sachs","tag-hmm","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-jefferies","tag-jpmorgan","tag-kawasaki-kisen-kaisha","tag-mitsui-osk-lines","tag-nippon-yusen","tag-shanghai-containerized-freight-index","tag-tundra-fonder","tag-yangzijiang-shipbuilding
["GET
