Body language expert Judi James has dissected Prince William and Princess Catherine’s red carpet appearance at the Digger premiere, pointing to several subtle gestures she believes offered a glimpse behind the couple’S polished smiles.<\/p>\n

William and Catherine, both 44, stepped out together for the film’s world premiere at Leicester Square in London on Tuesday night, joining Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise for the glamorous event.<\/p>\n

The Prince of Wales looked sharp in a velvet smoking jacket, while Catherine turned heads in a flowing, floor-length purple Jenny Packham gown.<\/p>\n

The Princess of Wales accessorised with the Queen Mother’s Amethyst Sautoir Necklace and Collingwood Pearl Drop earrings, a sentimental piece from the collection of her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.<\/p>\n

But while the couple appeared relaxed and cheerful in front of the cameras, James believes their body language suggested markedly different energies on the night.<\/p>\n

According to the expert, Catherine projected a renewed sense of confidence, which she interpreted as a sign the princess is firmly “back” following her cancer treatment in 2024.<\/p>\n

William, however, appeared to be “carrying the weight of the world” as the royal family navigates another turbulent period.<\/p>\n

“Kate has always approached public engagements with enthusiasm and grace \u2013 but she returned with a different energy in 2024 when she resumed royal duties after taking time away to receive cancer treatment,” James told The Mail on Wednesday.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Health problems are often known to put life, worries and problems into context as priorities become clear.<\/p>\n

“The way Kate carried herself yesterday [at the premiere] made it obvious that she’s found a way to put family rifts aside and place duty above all else.<\/p>\n

“With her head held high, shoulders open and a wide, genuine smile on her face \u2013 Kate’s body language was a signal to the world that she’s ready to take it all in her stride.”<\/p>\n

James said the mother-of-three is “clearly back” not only as the “matriarch and strength of the Royal Firm” but also its “star”.<\/p>\n

But James claimed William appeared to struggle to mirror his wife’s confidence, despite putting on a cheerful display for the cameras.<\/p>\n

She pointed in particular to the future King\u2019s hands as he descended the stairs and made his way onto the red carpet, interpreting two fleeting gestures as possible signs of tension.<\/p>\n

“For a start, on his descent down the stairs he subtly clenches his fists, a signal for emotional restraint and hidden tension,” James explained.<\/p>\n

“Then he puts his hand on his stomach \u2013 a mechanism for self-soothing, albeit most likely used subconsciously.”<\/p>\n

James added: “Although subtle gestures give away the weight that William obviously carried, his beaming smile and a glowing Kate prove that the Waleses are committed to showing up for the public.”<\/p>\n

The couple’s glamorous night out came amid another dramatic week for the monarchy, with William facing renewed headlines surrounding both sides of his family.<\/p>\n

On the same day as the premiere, his uncle Charles Earl Spencer released his explosive new memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.<\/p>\n

The book has already sparked controversy over claims concerning King Charles III in the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death in a Paris car crash in August 1997.<\/p>\n

In a rare response, Buckingham Palace pushed back against the allegations, stating: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, British broadcaster Piers Morgan has vowed to press ahead with legal action against Spencer and publisher Penguin despite receiving a formal apology over an inaccurate claim made about him in the memoir.<\/p>\n

The 62-year-old brother of the late Princess Diana apologised after incorrectly linking Morgan, 61, to the publication of “highly intrusive photographs of Princess Diana at the gym” in 1993.<\/p>\n

Morgan accepted Spencer’s apology over the factual error but said he would continue with legal action, with his lawyers demanding the disputed passages be removed from the book.<\/p>\n

William has also been navigating the return of his estranged younger brother, Prince Harry, 42, and his wife, Meghan Markle, 45, to the UK after six years living in the US.<\/p>\n

The brothers are understood not to have held a private, substantial conversation since the funeral of their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022.<\/p>\n
