A member of Canada’s governing Liberal Party said on Friday that he was removed from his position as parliamentary secretary to the minister of veterans affairs after voting for opposition-sponsored legislation to tighten Canada’s arms export controls.<\/p>\n
A report by CBC News said Sean Casey, who represents Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island in the House of Commons, was warned in March by his party’s whip that supporting a bill from New Democratic Party lawmaker Jenny Kwan would result in his dismissal from the post.<\/p>\n
The legislation sought to close loopholes that allow Canadian-made military equipment to be sold to other countries and later end up in Israel. Casey said he voted for the bill to reflect concerns of voters in his riding, even though it ultimately failed to pass in the Commons.<\/p>\n
Casey was one of 15 Liberal lawmakers who supported the bill, but the only one holding a parliamentary secretary post to do so. He said he learned of his removal Thursday in a call from the prime minister’s office, with Quebec MP Sophie Chatel named his successor a day later.<\/p>\n
