\n\tFifty seasons later, one key factor of \u201cSurvivor<\/a>\u201d remains the same: the show\u2019s approach to diversity.<\/p>\n

\n\tLongtime host Jeff Probst<\/a> told The New York Times<\/a> that \u201cnothing has changed\u201d in the reality competition series\u2019 approach, despite Paramount\u2019s rollback of DEI initiatives<\/a> to align with Trump\u2019s mandates in 2025.<\/p>\n

\n\tDiversity, he explained, is integral to the show\u2019s functionality. \u201cAnd if you watch our show, you know that we\u2019re so diverse \u2014 and it\u2019s not just skin color or ethnicity. It goes much deeper than that. It\u2019s one of the biggest positive changes ever,\u201d Probst said. \u201cOur stories are so much more interesting now because we have people from completely different walks of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued: \u201cI feel no pressure. No one ever says, \u2018Can you count the numbers again?\u2019 But Jesse Tannenbaum, who runs our casting team, knows: There\u2019s no stopping, not because we\u2019re told to do it. This is what we need. We need diversity. It\u2019s for narrative. All those differences matter in the story when you throw people together and force them to rely on each other while conspiring against each other. The more diverse, the more interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the show\u2019s DEI initiatives have stayed the same, Probst explained how casting has changed since the show began in 2000.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn the early seasons, the approach to casting and storytelling was different from the kind of storytelling we\u2019re doing now,\u201d Probst said. \u201cYou would cast for type. And friction was part of where we were at \u2014 we wanted friction in our storytelling, arguments and finger-pointing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tProbst became more than just the host when he signed on as showrunner of the 51-season show in 2010, with the goal of making the series more cinematic.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI always saw the game as a device. So when I was given the reins, the three things I really wanted to do were make it more cinematic; I wanted it to dive deep into Joseph Campbell\u2019s \u201cHero\u2019s Journey\u201d; and I wanted it to be a family show.
