\n\tAn artificial intelligence<\/a>-generated episode of Doctor Who was \u201cpretty good,\u201d according to BBC<\/a> Director General Matt Brittin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tBrittin, who used to run Google EMEA, revealed that somebody had recently sent him a 50-minute ep of the BBC\u2019s long-running sci-fi franchise, which was completely AI<\/a>-generated, and today he refused to slam it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPretty good\u201d was Brittin\u2019s verdict of the ep of the show that has been running on the BBC for six decades and will return with a new creative team in a couple of years\u2019 time. \u201cI mean it\u2019s not going to replace humans but we\u2019ll come on to that,\u201d he countered.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking at the RTS London Convention, Brittin echoed Amazon international boss Kelly Day in throwing his weight behind the power of AI. Day just said AI \u201cbrings down costs meaning more stories can be made, more diverse voices can get heard and more creative risks get taken.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEveryone\u2019s 1790685732 got the ability to create content almost at the standard of a Hollywood studio,\u201d he said. \u201cIn some cases it\u2019s not perfect but look at what you can do and that\u2019s changing all the time.<\/p>\n

\n\tBrittin\u2019s keynote with BBC presenter Kirsty Young came a few days after he said he would allow a programme to be made and presented by AI \u201cwithin guardrails.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tArtificial intelligence aside, Brittin\u2019s talk came at a seriously difficult time for the BBC. <\/p>\n

\n\tAmid a mega \u00a3500M ($662M) savings drive that is leading to hundreds of layoffs, channel closures are expected as soon as later this week, with youth-skewing BBC Three understood to be in the firing line.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tPossibly hinting at a BBC Three linear channel closure, he reiterated that \u201cif you look at on-demand consumption versus live consumption [on some of our services], you ask yourself, \u2018Is that the best way to spend a license fee pound?\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMore generally, Brittin said he is \u201chaving conversations with people whose jobs are at risk on a daily basis\u201d and he \u201cdoesn\u2019t underestimate\u201d the difficulty of the situation. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe are here for the same reasons that everyone else is,\u201d he added. \u201cWe have to do consolidation.\u201d <\/p>\n
