An Israeli airstrike killed the head of Hamas\u2019 armed wing in north Gaza on Tuesday, officials on both sides said, with the militant group describing him as a \u2060leader of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack<\/a> that precipitated war in the Palestinian enclave.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s government said its military had targeted and killed Izz al-Din Al-Beik, who they said was involved in planning attacks and recruiting. Hamas confirmed his death.<\/p>\n

Medics said the Israeli strike hit an apartment building in Gaza City\u2019s Nasr neighborhood<\/a> around dawn. A second person died from wounds after the attack, health officials \u2060said.<\/p>\n

Later on Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike near a medical clinic in \u200bJabalia \u2060refugee camp<\/a> killed one person, taking the day\u2019s death toll to at least three, medics said. The military said it had targeted a militant in the area.<\/p>\n

Israel, which says Hamas has been rearming \u2060and launching attacks in violation of an October ceasefire<\/a>, has stepped up strikes on the group in recent weeks.<\/p>\n

The \u200bIsraeli \u2060military says it has killed at least \u200c20 Hamas figures this month, including some it identified as senior commanders, people who took part in the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks or those who held Israeli hostages.<\/p>\n

Hamas has denied trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal \u200cand accuses Israel of undermining the Gaza peace deal.<\/p>\n

Also on \u200cTuesday, Palestinians in the Nuseirat refugee camp<\/a> in central Gaza buried the remains of 41 people killed by Israeli fire nearly three years ago.<\/p>\n

Their bodies were recently recovered from ruins.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of relatives and friends gathered in an open space to pay respect as the remains were placed \u2060in white shrouds decorated by Palestinian flags.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are mixed feelings between relief, sadness, and pain. But thank God, the fire in my heart has eased a little, because my husband now has a grave that my orphaned children and I can visit,\u201d said Areej Farajallah, who lost her husband in the Oct. 31, 2023 strike.<\/p>\n

Palestinian authorities estimate more than 8,000 bodies remain buried in wreckage. A Palestinian recovery team that combed wreckage in Gaza City last month said it found the remains of 112 people from the same clan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith minimal equipment, their remains were recovered after hours of \u200cwork, retrieving what was left of bones, some skulls, and hair with which it is extremely difficult \u200bfor us to identify them,\u201d said Rami Al-Ayedi, of Gaza\u2019s Civil Defense Service.<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s U.S.-brokered ceasefire \u200ccalls for eventual reconstruction of the territory. But little \u2060progress has been made as negotiators have failed to agree terms for Hamas to disarm and Israel \u2060to withdraw its troops.<\/p>\n

Israeli airstrikes have continued.<\/p>\n

At least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire, according to the territory\u2019s health officials, while \u200cIsrael says four soldiers have \u200bbeen killed.<\/p>\n
