The US \u2060justice department is not reopening a criminal investigation into former Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell<\/a> \u2060for cost overruns \u2060related \u200bto the central bank\u2019s building renovation project, a department spokesperson said on Friday.<\/p>\n

Attorney general Todd \u2060Blanche<\/a> \u2013 in comments to Bloomberg News<\/a>, which first reported the development \u2013 said he has not ruled out \u2060continuing to look into the project\u2019s oversight and potentially take \u200baction if evidence of \u200cwrongdoing came to \u200clight.<\/p>\n

The Fed\u2019s inspector general on Wednesday said<\/a> it found \u200cno grounds for a criminal referral or evidence of administrative misconduct tied to the project cost overruns. But its conclusion there was lax oversight drew a fresh call for Powell\u2019s resignation from Donald Trump, who across his two presidencies has been a vociferous critic of Powell.<\/p>\n

Powell has remained at \u200cthe Fed as a governor since stepping down as chair in May.<\/p>\n

His successor as Fed chair, Kevin \u200bWarsh said, on Thursday he would hire an independent auditor to \u201cverify accuracy and compliance\u201d for all of the project\u2019s costs.<\/p>\n

Blanche told Bloomberg News that if the new review found any evidence \u2060of criminal wrongdoing, the justice department could investigate.<\/p>\n

At his final \u200bpress conference \u200bas Fed chief in \u200bApril, Powell said he would not leave the \u200bcentral bank\u2019s board \u201cuntil this \u200cinvestigation is well and \u200btruly over, \u200bwith transparency and finality\u201d.<\/p>\n
