Ukrainian peace negotiators in Miami have been used as a \u201csmokescreen\u201d for a \u201cweak\u201d decision by Donald Trump to lift diesel sanctions on Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a furious response to the US president\u2019s backflip on Russian sanctions.<\/a> In a move likely to create a fresh crisis with Washington\u2019s Nato<\/a> allies, Trump announced the deal with Putin on his Truth Social network, saying it was essential to reduce fuel prices in the US, which have soared as a result of his decision to go to war with Iran. The Ukrainian president, who flew to Washington last month to plead with US lawmakers to pass tougher sanctions on Russia, said in a statement on Friday that it was \u201cunfortunately, a weak decision by strong partners\u201d. \u201cI believe our team is simply being used as a smokescreen. And that is certainly not fair. It is certainly not how partners should treat each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Negotiators for the \u2060US, Ukraine and Europe \u2060held \u200bsix \u200chours \u200cof talks \u200cin Miami on Friday with the aim \u200cof reaching agreement \u200bon ending \u200bthe war \u200bin \u200bUkraine, \u200ba \u200csource \u200bbriefed \u200bon the talks said. They discussed a postwar economic package for Ukraine and potential new security architecture between Europe and Russia, the source said. President Trump announced the diesel deal as his envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner were meeting with Ukrainian officials in Florida to discuss a peace plan.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s announcement was a betrayal of Ukraine, the European allies and US national security, said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, and senior Democrat senator, Elizabeth Warren. \u201cEnough is enough,\u201d the senators wrote. \u201cThe President must end his war with Iran instead of funding Russia\u2019s war machine.\u201d<\/p>\n

A number of prominent Republicans joined Democrats on Friday to condemn Trump for lifting the diesel sanctions, including congressman Don Bacon, who said the majority of Americans supported Ukraine. \u201cThe President\u2019s policies towards Russia and Ukraine are failures. We need moral clarity not moral ambiguity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ukraine struck and partly disabled a major datacentre operated by Russian technology company Yandex on Friday in the second such action in successive days. Yandex, which is heavily involved in Russia\u2019s \u200bAI development, said its data centre in the Kaluga region south-west of Moscow had been struck by Ukrainian drones and partly put out of action. Ukrainian arms maker Firepoint said Kyiv had used its FP-1 one-way attack drones to mount the \u2060strike.<\/p>\n

Four Ukrainians were arrested in Vienna this week on \u2060suspicion of spying, Austrian interior minister, Gerhard Karner, said on Friday, with Ukrainska \u2060Pravda newspaper saying two \u2060of \u200bits team were among those detained. Three remain in custody, Karner said, declining \u2060to provide further details because the investigation was ongoing. Austrian news agency APA quoted a \u2060spokeswoman for the Ukrainian embassy in Vienna as saying \u200bit was awaiting \u200can explanation from the \u200cAustrian authorities on the circumstances of and legal grounds \u200cfor the arrests. The embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

Russian \u2060forces struck \u200bthree cargo vessels in and \u2060around Ukraine\u2019s Black Sea ports on \u2060Friday, Russia\u2019s defence ministry \u200bsaid. The \u200cministry said \u200cone vessel was \u200chit in the port of Mykolaiv, another in the port of Chornomorsk and \u200ca third, bound for Odesa, in the \u200bBlack Sea. According to the ministry, all three vessels \u2060were being used \u200bto supply \u200bthe Ukrainian \u200bmilitary. Reuters could \u200bnot \u200cindependently verify \u200bthe \u200breport or the claim.<\/p>\n
