He’s also known for producing SNES classic Final Fantasy VI, my favorite entry in the long-running role-playing game series (more on this later). For context, Sakaguchi left Square (now Square Enix) to found Mistwalker in 2004 after the commercial failure of the movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within in 2001.

Despite its cult following, Lost Odyssey has been stuck on the Xbox 360 since its release, though the game is compatible with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S if you have the original disc (it’s not part of Microsoft’s new disc-to-digital platform) and is available digitally. Sakaguchi has even said he isn’t interested in remaking or remastering the game, much to the dismay of long-time fans like me.

I basically gave up hope of an official port a few years ago and figured that, at some point, I’d dig up the physical copy I think I still have buried in my storage locker somewhere. Now, roughly 20 years after Lost Odyssey first dropped on the Xbox 360, a fan-made recompilation PC port of the classic JRPG, LostOdysseyRecomp, has released for Windows 11, Linux, macOS, and Android.

Lost Odyssey is finally free from its Xbox 360 prison

As far as retro game recompilations go, LostOdysseyRecomp is impressive

This unofficial port gives people like me, who haven’t played Lost Odyssey since roughly 2009, an easier way to play the classic title while also introducing the somewhat long-lost game to a new audience.

freefrank’s LostOdysseyRecomp is clearly still a work-in-progress, but even in this early state, it’s pretty impressive. The recompilation port runs pretty smoothly on the ROG Xbox Ally X20, the platform I’ve primarily been playing it on, with a framerate between 40-60fps depending on how much action is on the screen. The original game targeted 30fps with occasional drops, so this is a pretty substantial improvement. You can also play at 90fps and 120fps if you’re on a powerful gaming PC.

Other quality-of-life upgrades include improved shadow resolutions, HDR, and support for FXAA, SMAA, TAA, DLSS, and FSR 3.1 anti-aliasing and upscaling. It even features DLSS, FSR, and XeSS frame generation, alongside FreeSync and G-Sync compatibility. I’ve been using FSR set to Quality, and it seems to help keep the game’s frame rate a bit closer to the 50-60fps range.

There’s one key gameplay improvement, too — the ability to save anywhere. It makes playing Lost Odyssey on a handheld much easier, since I can go into the menu and save whenever I want instead of waiting for a specific save point on the map. It’s difficult not to be impressed by the array of settings and options crammed into this port. At the same time, the team behind the port seems very dedicated. I think 10 or so updates have dropped since I started playing LostOdysseyRecomp, so I’m glad I started using Quiver to keep track of all the updates for the retro recompilations and decompilations I’m playing.

As with most recent recompilation retro game releases, you’ll need to rip your own physical copy of Lost Odyssey’s four dual-layer DVDs. As always, if you know where to look, you can hunt down these relatively easily online — but of course, definitely don’t do that. Lastly, LostOdysseyRecomp isn’t entirely human-made, and like nearly every recent recompilation/decompilation, its development was AI-assisted.

                    Related

Pokémon Red and Blue just got the HD-2D PC port I’ve dreamed about for years

Nintendo really should have made this happen already.

Lost Odyssey actually inspired Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 in some ways

Lost Odyssey still looks pretty good today, though some textures are ridiculously muddy. To be fair, this is true of most Xbox 360 games when you go back and play them in 2026. Thankfully, its story is just as compelling as ever, and it really feels like a Sakaguchi game and the spiritual sequel to Final Fantasy VI.

That’s probably why Lost Odyssey and Final Fantasy VI share similar overall vibes. They combine traditional fantasy themes with a steampunk aesthetic and a story focused on magic’s influence on the world. Both games also feature many characters with memory issues. While I haven’t played it a lot, I can see a lot of Mistwalker’s Fantasian in Lost Odyssey.

On top of all that, Lost Odyssey’s turn-based gameplay is surprisingly refreshing in a genre where modern entries feature more active combat. I can clearly see how the title influenced Clair Obscure: Expedition 33‘s combat and tone, something Guillaume Broche, the game’s creative director, has discussed in several interviews since the critically acclaimed turn-based RPG released. However, unlike Clair Obscure: Expedition 33, I don’t find Lost Odyssey’s timing-based mechanics to be ridiculously frustrating.

On the other hand, the game’s controls can be a bit stiff, and at times, the 3D backgrounds are difficult to navigate. Lost Odyssey can also feel very linear, especially early in the game, but if you’re familiar with early Final Fantasy titles, this shouldn’t surprise you.

If you’re looking for an excellent, criminally underrated JRPG, Lost Odyssey is absolutely worth your time. And thanks to LostOdysseyRecomp, it’s finally easier than ever to experience this Xbox 360 classic on PC.

                    Related

I don’t need the Switch 2’s Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake — I already made my own

Ship of Harkinian powers a native PC port of the N64 classic.

[6
85,46,125
post-642529","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-technology
["GET
