\n\tOn top of writing, directing, producing and acting in his new movie The Debut<\/a>, Jesse Eisenberg<\/a> took on an additional unexpected role: songwriter.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor the film<\/a> \u2014 which follows a shy housewife (played by Julianne Moore<\/a>) cast in a community theater production who loses herself in the performance \u2014 Eisenberg wrote seven of the original songs that comprise the movie\u2019s central show, called Nosy Neighbors; one of those tunes, \u201cThis City May Have Chewed Me Up (But It Hasn\u2019t Spit Me Out),\u201d is getting a best original song awards push<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt a screening on the Fox lot on Monday, Eisenberg joined composer Emile Mosseri and moderator Justin Hurwitz to break down his musical process, teasing, \u201cMy brain goes to musical theater cliches more than it goes to like sports or women \u2014 my wife! One woman, one woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe star emphasized that he is not classically trained but writes music on the piano or while playing guitar, \u201cand again, the thing I can write is musical theater music. It\u2019s not like I also do like what you do [in composing scores]. This is the extent of my talents and I worked really hard on it, but that\u2019s my ceiling.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tEisenberg recalled working with Mosseri on 2022 film When You Finish Saving the World<\/a> and writing a song for Finn Wolfhard\u2019s character. \u201cI sent it to Emile and Emile was so sweet, but he was like, \u2018This is really good if he was doing musical theater music, and he\u2019s more doing rock music,’\u201d Eisenberg explained. \u201cAnd so I was like, \u2018OK, can you rewrite the music?’\u201d Mosseri did, but Eisenberg said it made him realize \u201cI\u2019m not a good enough musician to then do jazz or something like more complicated\u2026. I really like musical theater music and I like a lot of songs I\u2019ve written. But like that\u2019s the extent of my skillset.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tMosseri responded by noting how Eisenberg is \u201cvery humble and very sort of downplays his musical prowess because he wrote these incredible songs,\u201d as the filmmaker explained that with a story set in the world of the theater, \u201cit gave me permission in a way to make things heightened, because musicals are heightened and silly and absurdist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat doesn\u2019t mean he didn\u2019t take the songwriting seriously, though, with Eisenberg explaining, \u201cI wanted to feel like this is a real thing. So I\u2019m making fun of the songs, but when I\u2019m sitting there writing \u2018This City May Have Chewed Me Up,\u2019 I\u2019m crying. Like I am feeling the city have chewed me up, Jesse, and it hasn\u2019t spit me out, Jesse. Like it\u2019s very personal, but I knew the context around it is going to feel silly.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe added that he was particularly inspired by the wave of \u201990s musicals that \u201ckind of fetishized New York City,\u201d which he was obsessed with growing up. \u201cAll the songs in the movie are like in the spirit of that weird thing, like \u2018Finding a good guy in town is like a needle in a haystack,’\u201d Eisenberg joked. \u201cThis stuff where like I don\u2019t think any real person who\u2019s self-actualized can relate to that feeling, but they work in the musical theater.\u201d <\/p>\n
