The child of Libyan and Lithuanian immigrants, Essers was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, in 1974. After a stint in finance, she left the corporate world to produce films—Totsi, one of her many projects, became the first African film to win an Academy Award, in 2006. Two years later, Esser, ready for another change, bought the Goodman Gallery from its founder, Linda Givon. She was 34.

Esser’s entry into art was unorthodox. “I was motivated to pursue this path out of total naïveté,” she said. “What I did know was that I also absolutely love art and believe in it as a driver for social change.” When Goodman Gallery opened in 1966, it defied apartheid by becoming one of the few spaces to champion the work of Black artists. Since taking over the gallery, Essers has furthered its efforts toward social justice and transcultural visibility, opening outposts in London and New York and starting a mentorship program to help Black women break into the art world.

Essers currently lives in Cape Town. Zeitz MOCAA

One of the most important spaces for contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. I remain devastated by the loss of its late chief curator, Koyo Kouoh, whose extraordinary curatorial vision transformed the institution and its legacy. At the same time, I feel heartened to see Elvira Dyangani Ose carry that mantle forward. She’s a former collaborator of mine and a curator whose work I have admired deeply for many years. It might not be the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but its programming continually surprises me. Goodman Gallery artists El Anatsui, William Kentridge, David Koloane, and Sue Williamson have all been honored there with career surveys. New African fiction can be found downstairs, while collectable Africana is kept upstairs under lock and key. Ask the proprietor, André Sales, for a tour.
