United States President Donald Trump has issued an endorsement of Israel\u2019s incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing a close race in parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27.<\/p>\n
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump praised the Israeli leader for being an ally of the US in its war on Iran. He added that he was giving his \u201cComplete and Total Endorsement\u201d to Netanyahu.<\/p>\n

The US president\u2019s backing comes nine days before the Israeli election \u2014 and after speculation<\/a> that it might not come at all.<\/p>\n Trump had refused to endorse Netanyahu earlier this month, when asked repeatedly about the Israeli leader\u2019s job performance in an interview with Time magazine.<\/p>\n Instead, when pressed by his interviewer, Trump avoided<\/a> the subject, shifting the focus instead to his own popularity or security in the Middle East.<\/p>\n The two leaders have met more than a half dozen times since January 2025, but there have been reports of disagreements, including over the war against Iran and other conflicts.<\/p>\n In June, Trump acknowledged calling Netanyahu \u201cf***ing crazy\u201d in a phone conversation where he expressed frustration about Israel\u2019s attacks on Lebanon.<\/p>\n Trump had reportedly asked Netanyahu not to take further action in Lebanon, in an apparent attempt to preserve a short-lived April ceasefire with Iran.<\/p>\n The two leaders had jointly launched a war against Iran on February 28, but the conflict has cost Trump domestic support.<\/p>\n The war has upended the global oil and gas supply, with no clear end in sight.<\/p>\n A Pew Research Center poll found this month that roughly two-thirds of US voters disapprove of Trump\u2019s handling of the war, which has driven up consumer fuel prices and raised concerns about draining military stockpiles.<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s Republican Party is facing a critical midterm election<\/a> on November 3 that will decide whether it maintains control of the US Congress, as well as other key state and local offices.<\/p>\n Experts have speculated that Trump\u2019s prior reticence to endorse Netanyahu may have come from public perception that Israel may have coaxed the US into the war.<\/p>\n Netanyahu\u2019s Likud Party and its far-right coalition are also facing the prospect of losing the October contest<\/a> to an opposition<\/a> bloc led by Yashar party head Gadi Eisenkot.<\/p>\n But despite reports of fraying relations, Trump told the news outlet Axios on Sunday that his endorsement of Netanyahu was never in doubt.<\/p>\n \u201cI was always going to do that. I just didn\u2019t want to do it too soon,\u201d Trump said in a short telephone interview to the publication, adding: \u201cIt is important that Israel has a person they can count on.\u201d<\/p>\n Axios said it questioned Trump about whether he could work with another Israeli leader other than Netanyahu. The US president answered evasively.<\/p>\n \u201cMaybe I will, maybe I won\u2019t. Who wants to take the chance?\u201d Trump replied.<\/p>\n In his social media post announcing the endorsement, Trump also defended his and Netanyahu\u2019s decision to initiate the war against Iran. The president argued it was only a matter of time before Iran would have attacked both the US and Israel.<\/p>\n The war, Trump argued, had already left Iran \u201csystematically destroyed, both Militarily and Financially, and unless they change their ways, rapidly, we will soon finish the job\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIf Israel has the wrong Leader, which would be anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n \u201cBibi Netanyahu has been Strong, Brave, and Brilliant in the face of tremendous opposition, including that coming from even Israel, itself.\u201d<\/p>\n In response to the post, Netanyahu posted a video on social media expressing gratitude to the US president.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m so honoured and humbled by your extraordinary endorsement,\u201d Netanyahu said. \u201cThere\u2019s never been a greater friend of Israel in the White House. That\u2019s an understatement.\u201d<\/p>\n Netanyahu also praised Trump for not being \u201cset back by internal criticism\u201d about the war against Iran. He directed several of his comments to US voters, in an attempt to offer support for Trump\u2019s Republican Party amid questions about the rising cost of living.<\/p>\n \u201cLet me say to the American people: If you are worried about today\u2019s gas prices, think of what will happen if Iran gets nuclear weapons, something that Donald Trump and I will never allow,\u201d Netanyahu said.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen that threat of that regime disappears, gas prices will go down, and how. But only under Trump.
