Out of all the smart devices on the market, I’ve become rather fond of the smartwatch in recent years. That second screen on your wrist offers quite a lot of utility besides just telling the time or alerting you of incoming messages. From tracking your exercise and sleep to paying for a coffee without fishing for your phone, there are plenty of small conveniences that start to add up. The real appeal, though, is how naturally these features fit into your day. A good smartwatch should give you fewer reasons to reach for your phone, while making the information you need easier to access.

Both Samsung and Apple have built extensive ecosystems that give their watches a close relationship with their phones, apps and services. That integration can offer advantages that third-party smartwatches cannot always match, even when they support the same phone. Compatibility is only part of the equation though, having access to the platform’s features and making them work consistently across devices is what makes the experience feel complete. It also means choosing a smartwatch is often as much about the phone in your pocket as the hardware on your wrist.

If you are a Samsung phone user, you are in luck, and there are plenty of really good watches to choose from. The latest model to hit our market is the Samsung Galaxy Watch9. It brings plenty of useful technology to your wrist; it looks stunning, and it works well with other Android smartphones.

The Watch9 is available in 40mm and 44mm strap sizes, and there are two model varieties to choose from, one with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth only, and another with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and LTE. The 44mm unit I have for review is the former, but if you spend R1,000 more, the LTE model gives you an eSIM for mobile connectivity when your phone is not around.

At around 48g, the watch feels surprisingly light, and you hardly notice it is there after a while.

The Super AMOLED display is another strong feature. It has a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, with sapphire crystal protecting the screen. Under the hood, Samsung has moved to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Wear OS 7 and One UI 9 Watch provide the software foundation, with access to all the most popular apps, including Google Maps, Spotify and Strava.

Health tracking remains the core focus, and Samsung’s BioActive sensor supports heart-rate and body-composition measurements, while sleep coaching and Energy Score help interpret your routines. Newer tools include Vitals, which tracks overnight signals against your usual baseline, and Fitness Index, which brings several fitness measurements together.

Then there is battery life and charging, the Samsung Galaxy Watch9 delivers a solid day’s worth of use with the display always on. Pretty much standard for these wearable computers. Charging unfortunately is not a quick process, and you’ll need about an hour and a half to get it fully charged when flat.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch9 works with any device that has Android 13 or newer, but some health functions require a Samsung phone.

During my three weeks with this watch, I enjoyed the fitness and health tracking features Samsung built in. The apps make data and information easy to access and navigate. You also have access to loads of watch faces and apps to add to the smartwatch experience.

At R7,699, the Samsung Galaxy Watch9 offers a lot of features, and if you like using Google Gemini, you even have the power of AI on your wrist. It’s a really nice feature to run through ideas while you jog or cycle.

Existing Watch8 users may not feel the need to upgrade, but if you are looking for an excellent smartwatch and fitness tracker, the Watch9 is worth looking into.

BOTTOM LINE

The Galaxy Watch9 can tell you plenty about your habits, but it still needs you to maintain one more, charging it regularly. Having said that, there is plenty to love on the Watch9 if you are looking for more than a fitness tracker.
