BBC Radio 4\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d program Thursday<\/a>. <\/p>\nThe Oscar-winning British actor was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in 2012, an eye disease that makes it difficult for those affected to see directly in front of them.<\/p>\n
In 2024, she told NPR\u2019s \u201cAll Things Considered\u201d that the condition had worsened and impacted her ability to work. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd apart from the fact that I can walk straight past to an old friend, I can act it. And it doesn\u2019t matter \u2014 in the great scheme of things, doesn\u2019t matter,\u201d she told \u201cCBS Mornings\u201d at the time.<\/p>\n
She told the BBC that she has to \u201cmake allowances\u201d for the condition, which has worsened, and \u201cjust get on and don\u2019t think about it too much.\u201d <\/p>\n
When asked by the BBC\u2019s Emma Barnett how aging is going, Dench had one word in response: \u201cRubbish.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing to say for it at all,\u201d she continued. She added that she doesn\u2019t think much about the concept of aging. <\/p>\n
Dench, one of Britain\u2019s most revered actors, has a decadeslong career spanning film and theater. She is well known for her work in several Shakespearean plays. <\/p>\n
When asked what advice she would give to her younger self, she said that taking risks is good. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf people say, \u2018Oh, this is so like you, you\u2019ve got to play it,\u2019 no, that\u2019s not the one to play,\u201d she said. \u201cFor me, always frightening, but that\u2019s part of it.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cUse the energy, but, just don\u2019t ever take it for granted. … It\u2019s always work in progress.
