Continuing a franchise has always been one of the harder feats for studios and filmmakers to get right. Where some writers and directors play it too safe, failing to outshine the original, others become too obsessed with being different that they lose sight of what works.

Where some of these movies truly rival the quality and impact of The Godfather Part II, others represent its equal within their own genre. An excellent sequel doesn’t have to be as Oscar-worthy as Coppola’s film, but rather just a great continuation of what fans loved about the predecessor. Hollywood has been churning out franchise installments for decades, and these rise to the level of perfection.

The Dark Knight Perfected the Batman Formula

Christopher Nolan rehabilitated Batman’s Hollywood image after the disastrous Batman & Robin when he began his ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy. A saga that began with Bruce Wayne’s origin and battle with Ra’s al Ghul in Batman Begins ascended to perfection with 2008’s The Dark Knight. Here, he goes up against the malevolent chaos of the Joker, who works to corrupt the city’s soul and bring its institutions crashing down.

For all intents and purposes, The Dark Knight is the Heat of the superhero genre, spinning the Gotham mythos into a gritty crime masterpiece. Nolan was less interested in the caped theatrics of the lore than he was in the symbolism behind Bruce Wayne’s war on crime. Just as The Godfather movies became standard-bearers for crime drama, this marked an inflection point within the superhero genre, and it never looked back.

For a Few Dollars More Is the Only Perfect Western Sequel

Lee Van Cleef as Colonel MortimerImage via United Artists

After Clint Eastwood’s breakout role in Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars, he returned to the Man with No Name for 1965’s For a Few Dollars More. This time, he teams up with the veteran bounty hunter Colonel Mortimer to bring down a band of thieves led by murderous outlaw El Indio. With the younger man seeking riches and his older partner out for revenge, they infiltrate the gang to get the drop on them and make out like bandits.

For a Few Dollars More is the only perfect Western sequel out there, arguably carrying an even stronger story than The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Everything here feels more raw and personal, especially for Lee Van Cleef in the role of Mortimer. As thrilling a gunslinger revenge movie as it gets, it’s impossible to look away as the unlikely partners inch closer to victory.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day Is the Ultimate Sci-Fi Action Movie

TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY, Edrward Furlong, 1991.Image via © Tri-Star Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

Seven years after James Cameron’s original, Arnold Schwarzenegger reprised his role as a T-101 for Terminator 2: Judgment Day. This time, the machine sent back in time has been reprogrammed by humans to protect John Connor, and must contend with the high-tech T-1000. Once he rescues the future leader of the resistance, they set out to save Sarah too, leading to a mission to try and prevent Skynet once and for all.

If The Godfather Part II is the perfect crime sequel, Terminator 2 is its complete equal in the world of sci-fi action. More than anything else, it boasts one of the best story structures its genre has ever seen, and managed to make the world weep for a literal killing machine. It’s one of the best things either Schwarzenegger or Cameron ever made, and helped open the door to a distinctly ’90s era of sci-fi cinema.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Changed Hollywood Forever

Image via Lucasfilm

Star Wars soared to its high point when Irvin Kershner took over for the sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, giving the ’80s its greatest fantasy experience. While the Rebel Alliance is hunted by Darth Vader across the galaxy, Luke travels to the planet Dagobah, where Master Yoda begins his training. As Han Solo and Leia Organa are walked into a trap, Skywalker must make a choice between Yoda’s wisdom and saving his friends.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back dominated the ’80s blockbuster scene, and pushed real stakes back into fantasy. More than that, it created the quintessential twist ending, something that’s remained a cultural touchstone for a full 46 years. There was a Hollywood before this film, and one after, and the latter’s most ambitious spectacles have all been influenced by it in one way or another.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Is Peak Fantasy

Theoden at Theodred’s funeral in The Lord of the Rings: The Two TowersImage via New Line Cinema

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings adaptation unveiled the most ambitious fantasy epic to date, especially in the second installment, The Two Towers. After the breaking of the Fellowship, Frodo and Sam continue their journey to Mordor, encountering Gollum along the way. As they try to bring him under control, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas set out to save the kingdom of Rohan from Saruman’s Uruk-hai.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers took everything great about J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories and united them in a single masterpiece. It feels like a masterpiece painting come to life, and every step deeper into the world of Middle-earth leaves the audience more excited for what comes next. Here, fantasy peaked, and studios have been trying and failing to replicate it ever since.

Back to the Future II Is A Thrilling Popcorn Movie

Universal Pictures

After the first Back to the Future became a ringing worldwide success, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale continued the adventures of Doc Brown and Marty McFly. Picking up where the first movie left off, it follows the pair, along with Jennifer, as they travel 30 years ahead to 2015. Everything goes wrong when an aged Biff Tannen finds the DeLorean and sees the opportunity to enrich his past self, turning Hill Valley into his own slice of dystopia.

Where The Godfather Part II is the height of elevated crime cinema, Back to the Future II is the ultimate popcorn adventure flick. They exist on opposite sides of the movie experience spectrum, but are equally perfect on their own terms. For anyone seeking something more escapist and simply enjoyable, Zemeckis’ sequel is the best place to go, and it’s been the ultimate time-travel story since ’89.

Dune: Part Two Is What Modern Sci-Fi Fantasy Should Be

Gurney Halleck in a space suit in Dune: Part Two.Image via Warner Bros.

In 2024, Denis Villeneuve turned in easily the greatest sci-fi fantasy movie since the ’80s when Warner Bros. released Dune: Part Two. It continues the tale of Paul Atreides as he leads the Fremen through the deserts of Arrakis to usurp the Emperor and slaughter the Harkonnens. Manipulating the locals’ prophecy to gain power, he makes his play against the Great Houses.

Dune: Part Two represents the height of contemporary sci-fi fantasy blockbuster cinema, even overshadowing everything Star Wars has done in the last 40 years. It’s a film that screams ambition, sincerity, vision, and craft all at once, pushing the limits of filmmaking beyond anything from the ’70s. Of course, Herbert’s story has little in common with Mario Puzo’s novel, but both adaptations stand out as high cinema.

Mad Max: Fury Road Is the Perfect Blockbuster of the 21st Century

Hugh Keays-Byrne as Immortan JoeImage via Warner Bros

George Miller made his long-awaited and highly demanded return to Mad Max in 2015 when he cast Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road. Set after the previous films, it continues the tale of the road warrior antihero through the Australian wasteland. This time, he bands together with a group of women looking to escape the tyrannical Immortan Joe, who rallies an armada of vehicles to chase them down.

The dystopian world of Mad Max never ceases to be interesting, but Fury Road managed to beat out even The Road Warrior as the best in the franchise. It’s an epic feature-length chase sequence with unrelenting tension and action, claiming a spot near the top of 21st-century cinema. When it comes to overshadowing everything that came before, Mad Max: Fury Road is the perfect sequel, and is as great for action fans as The Godfather Part II is for crime buffs.

In 1974, Francis Ford Coppola created what many deem the greatest crime movie of all time in The…

[27
146,85,46,397
post-654469","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-entertainment","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-movies
["GET
