Petrol prices in the UAE<\/a> are expected to rise again in November, as the recovery in Middle East oil supplies does not immediately translate into a return to normality for the energy market, according to analysts.<\/p>\n

Costs at the pump rose for a third consecutive month in October<\/a> due to lingering uncertainty around a potential US-Iran truce<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At present, Super 98, Special 95, E-Plus 91 and diesel cost Dh4.40 ($1.20), Dh4.28 ($1.17), Dh4.21 ($1.15) and Dh4.80 ($1.31) per litre, respectively \u2013 up by more than 70 per cent since March, the first full month of the war in Iran.<\/p>\n

They are still significantly lower compared to markets such as Britain. The Petrol Prices UK website shows that this week unleaded petrol and diesel cost an average of \u00a31.75 (Dh8.61) and \u00a31.99 (Dh9.79) per litre, respectively.<\/p>\n

In the US, petrol prices, which vary by state, are mostly higher than in the UAE. AAA Gas Prices shows that petrol ranges from $4.29 to $5.20 per gallon, which is equivalent to $1.13 to $1.37 when converted to litres. Diesel is at $6.32 per gallon, or $1.67 per litre \u2013 markedly higher than in the Emirates.<\/p>\n

Oil prices also recorded a sharp rise this month, as Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels stepped up their attacks on Saudi Arabia, causing crude to hit five-month highs this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Brent<\/a> was trading 1.65 per cent higher to hit $115 a barrel at 5.26pm UAE time, while West Texas Intermediate climbed 1.89 per cent to $101.30 a barrel.<\/p>\n

With Brent this month exceeding September’s peak, \u201cthe risk of another increase in UAE petrol prices for November is elevated\u201d, said Jordan Lawrence, chief executive and co-founder of London-based financial services firm Damisa.<\/p>\n

\u201cOctober\u2019s fuel rates already rose significantly, and the committee\u2019s end-of-month review will reflect the full month\u2019s international averages, refined-product prices and costs,\u201d Mr Lawrence told The National.<\/p>\n

UAE economy minister: Strait of Hormuz will remain vital<\/p>\n

Oil movements across the Strait of Hormuz, which before the war made up a fifth of the world’s energy exports, are gradually picking up, according to ship tracking data. <\/p>\n

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright<\/a> said last week that up to 14 million barrels of oil a day were moving through the strait, with Gulf crude flows recovering to between 80 and 90 per cent of prewar levels.<\/p>\n

However, while October has shown a recovery in Middle East oil exports, that does not necessarily mean the market has returned to normal, said George Pavel, general manager at Naga.com Middle East, a capital markets firm operating in Abu Dhabi’s ADGM.<\/p>\n

\u201cOngoing threats to shipping and persistent uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz continue to support prices. The key change is that the market is increasingly pricing the risk of further disruptions, instead of simply assessing current production and export volumes,\u201d he told The National.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven when supply flows recover, the cost and reliability of transporting crude remain important constraints \u2026 if exports remain resilient and diplomatic progress reduces the threat to shipping, prices could retreat quickly. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe next decisive factor will be whether October’s security risks translate into lasting physical supply losses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahmad Assiri, a research strategist at financial services firm Pepperstone, noted that even if barrels continue reaching markets through the Strait of Hormuz, uncertainty over the reliability of future deliveries gives buyers a reason to pay a significant premium for now.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany buyers have become price-insensitive due to elevated uncertainty \u2026 a diplomatic breakthrough could provide some ease and a pullback,\u201d he told The National.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, a sustained decline would require confidence that infrastructure and shipping routes can operate securely, which is a hard thing to see in the current environment,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
