Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin know a thing or two about extreme athletes. From the daring rock climbing of \u201cFree Solo\u201d<\/a> to their new film<\/a> \u201cEverest: The Other Side,\u201d<\/a> which follows Jim Morrison\u2019s attempts to fulfill his late wife Hilaree Nelson\u2019s dream of skiing down the world\u2019s tallest mountain, the documentarians love to capture fearless people drawn to extreme challenges. <\/p>\n

During a conversation about \u201cEverest\u201d with IndieWire features writer Alison Foreman at our Art of the Doc<\/a> event in Los Angeles, the filmmakers discussed what draws them to the subject matter over and over again. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn all our films, you think you\u2019re seeing these exceptional, extraordinary, extreme athletes. But at the end of the day they\u2019re still human beings like the rest of us,\u201d Chin said. \u201cWhat I\u2019m interested in bridging that gap where people feel like they can\u2019t relate to people out there doing these things. But the story is really human, and this film is about very human experiences. Even though they\u2019re climbing and skiiing the most extreme places in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vasarhelyi also emphasized the fact that each documentary subject is a different person with their own unique story to tell. In the case of Nelson, she saw someone who was deeply goal-oriented but lacked the grand romanticizations about her sport that drive so many other athletes. She saw the adventurer as a fellow parent who lived a fairly normal life when she wasn\u2019t pushing herself to scale the world\u2019s highest peaks. <\/p>\n

\u201cI had met a lot of extreme athletes, but Hilaree had a candor to her vocation that I hadn\u2019t heard before,\u201d Vasarhelyi said. \u201cIt\u2019s not romantic. She says in the film, \u2018I know it\u2019s just a mountain, but it\u2019s everything to me. And I\u2019m like a dog with a bone.\u2019 And I understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n
